OSH NEWSLETTER - June/July 2024

Welcome everyone to our latest OSH newsletter of 2024.

There’s masses going on at OSH - so pop the kettle on and give this a good read through!

This summer is going to be busy, busy, busy!

Summer Open Studios

Plans are shaping up nicely for our Summer Open Studios. Just a reminder that the dates are:

  • Lewis: 25th, 26th, 27th July and 1st, 2nd, 3rd August

  • Harris: 1st, 2nd, 3rd August and 8th, 9th, 10th August

The standard opening times will be advertised as 11am – 4 pm, though some venues or studios may decide to open earlier or close later.

All members are asked to collect their signs, brochures and possibly banners on Friday 19th June from the Stornoway Business Hub, 9 Bank Street, HS1 2XG. We will produce guidance on how they should be put up. Joint venues – please nominate ONE artist to do the collection on that day.

Ralph will shortly be organising a Zoom meeting for all members to explain the Open Studios process. We will explain how to organise your studio, how to put up the signage and all the other practicalities you need to think about. We will email you when we have the time and date. Please do try to come, though it will be recorded for those who can’t.

In the meantime, we ask you all to carry out a health and safety check on your studio, and to ensure you have appropriate insurance.  Please also re-read the Members’ Handbook.

Other Exhibitions

‘On the Edge - our islands, by island artists'

Talla na Mara - 1st to 31st July

 ‘Islands Unframed’

An Lanntair café bar - 2nd July to 31st August

Do show your support by popping into any or all of these if you can!

Also, please share posts about all our events on your social media feeds. Check out recent posts on our Facebook and Instagram feeds to find things to share.

Stornoway Art Walk

This scheme promotes local artists by exhibiting examples of their work and contact details in shop windows in the centre of town. A number of artists are taking part this year, and their work will be displayed in local shop windows. Info will be sent out soon and will be on the website and in our social media.

Free Art Monday

This will take place on 22nd July. Artists promote their work by placing a small piece of their artwork where it can be found by a member of the public. Please consider donating a small piece of art, or even card/s (not obligatory of course). These are to be located in local places, with clues to their whereabouts on social media (each artist does this themself).

  • Notes for Free Art Monday: PDF

  • Small label for you to print and attach to your work PDF or JPEG

Artisan markets update

No decision has been taken yet about holding a craft fair – there seem to be a lot going on already! If we do hold one later in the year, we will aim to offer something a bit different, such as workshops and demos.

Schools Competition

We have three schools entering – the theme is ‘Things To Do’. We have received lots of wonderful work from the children. This will be displayed from 24th July – 5th August at the Museum Learning Room, and there will be an independent judge.

Highland Art Prize

OSH was involved in this last year and our very own David Greenall actually won the prize! So we are delighted that OSH has again been invited to submit 5 pieces of work. These will be selected from work shown at the upcoming Talla na Mara and An Lanntair exhibitions by a judge. The successful pieces will need to be ‘professionally framed’ with D rings and wire’. If sold, 30% commission will be taken. The winner of the Highland Art Prize 2024 will be judged by Ishbel Murray, the artist and art teacher based on the Isle of Lewis. It will be announced in Oban during October.

Artists’ gatherings are held most months at An Lanntair, on a Friday evening (book your place with a free ticket). OSH members (or camp followers) are invited to meet for a drink and blether afterwards. We’d especially love to meet new faces!

The next gathering is on Friday, 12th July -  island writer, artist and storyteller Ian Stephen, who will be reflecting on his recent travels around Scottish arts festivals, and photographer Deljeem Rai, fresh from his first solo exhibition at Island Darkroom. Book here Artist Gathering
