Parnati in the Kaurna calendar is a time of cooling down after the heat of Warltati, bringing the beginning of the Winter rains and cold mornings with dew on the ground. The first month, which is April, is a time for fire farming. Kangaroo grass is a traditional cereal crop and the first rains of Parnati activate the seeds on the ground to self burrow into the soil and protect them from the heat of fires. The smoke and ash from the fires fertilise the seeds that would otherwise lie dormant without this nourishment.
Recently the children in Steiner schools celebrated this change of season with their festival plays and offerings of harvest foods for donation. In the play, the dragon is tamed by the strength of will of humankind, the working together of the elements and human ingenuity. The power of the dragon is harnessed to bring nourishment to our earth and our souls through the cold dark months of winter. This transformation of that which could destroy us into that which can nourish us is the motif for the season. Parnati blessings from Abbi and Shani |

Eyre Peninsula Waldorf School Initiative |
|
|
The Eyre Peninsula Waldorf School Initiative has been working towards building a Waldorf School in Port Lincoln for over 4 years. During this time, many different board members have come and gone and progress at times has been very slow (and challenging!). Whilst the initiative looks different than it did, even a year ago there is no doubt that hundreds of hours of love and hard work has gone into the dream so many hold dear to their hearts. On the 16th February 2023, the future school grounds and the area where we hold our nature playgroup was burnt down to nothing but ash and debris. The fire, in less than an hour, destroyed the resources, infrastructure, toys and building materials we had worked so hard to accumulate. Weeks of doubt followed the fire day, however, like the sun slowly streaming through clouds, we are emerging stronger and more determined than ever. We are working very hard to rebuild but we need financial assistance to not only rebuild our playgroup space for our children, but to also progress to the early stages of the school development. We have a number of ways you can support our initiative; purchasing our merchandise, donating on our mycause page and sharing our dream and following along on the journey. Together, with the help of those who understand and value what we are trying to achieve, we will wrap our hearts around our future school and provide the children of our future the schooling they deserve. |

Class 5 Indian Feast This term, Abbi has been teaching the stories of Manu, of Ganga, of Arjuna and Krishna, which give the Class Five a glimpse of a civilisation that resisted an involvement with the world of the senses, steeped in Maya, a dream world where time was less urgent. To coincide with these studies of Indian mythology, Class Five hosted an Indian Feast fundraising event last week. The children performed Indian-inspired music and dance, displayed artwork and we had a wonderful volunteer applying henna art. The class community provided a variety of Indian foods and chai for the event, which was a huge success and raised $1300 for ASEA and the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. Pictures by Emma Clear |

Class 7 Autumn Festival Mandala Imagine the infinite battle between Good and Evil There’s the Evil, where every time you do something bad, you’re feeding the dragon inside you. Then...there’s the Good. Every time you do something heroic, you become that hero, just like Michael, defeating the dragon. That’s what we have represented in our Mandala. The dragon, as negative emotions like fear and hate and negative actions like being unkind. In the making of the Mandala we planned the design and lugged up 50kg of sand from the sandpit. We used acrylic paint to dye it and then spread it out on tarps to dry. We learnt the hard way that if you leave dyed sand to dry, it drys in clumps so we had to grind it through a bit of mesh so we could use it. We chalked out the design and started making the actual Mandala. Here we found a useful tool was a playing card because you could shape and flatten the sand with it. We worked hard to get it done and our teacher, Josh, stayed after everyone else had left to finish the bits that were left. It was a long process but an enjoyable one. Everyone can be a hero, you don’t have to be a star at something to be one. What details can you spot in the Mandala? Words shared at the Primary Harvest Festival by Isabelle Schaeffer & Christopher Haynes on behalf of Class 7 |

Working through how to keep centered in our commitment to respectful care and make the right time for connection is central to a settled and mindful family life. Unpacking truly connected parenting is key to a more peaceful family where children can play more independently and adults can get on with the work of the home without so much stress.
Previously called "A Day at Home" this workshop looks at the basic rhythms of respectful care that support independence and foster joy. Daily practices, rhythms and self care for adults. |

MINDFULLY MANAGING DEVICES FROM BIRTH TO FOREVER Monday 1st and Monday 8th May 7.45 - 9.30pm Devices often seem to dominate public and private life nowadays. Developing a family culture around devices and working through a plan can help you to consciously choose how devices are used in the family and how this impacts the future... rather than reacting to calls from children, pressure from others or accidentally beginning things you wish you hadn't. This workshop is a conversation to consider what we might do today to put us on a road to the family culture we are hoping for. We will also have the opportunity to unpack some of the decisions you might have already made but perhaps wish to change. We will talk about how to talk with partners in planning and to talk with children to share your plans. There is no judgement of your choices or journey in this workshop - rather a safe place to consider what you want for your family. |
