August 2024

Hey everybody, happy Tuesday! Hope you all are well and have been enjoying the summer months. It's actually a little cooler in North Carolina this week, which is nice for getting outside. Hope it's nice where you are, too.

Today I have something to show you that I've been looking forward to sharing for a long time. This summer I completed a watercolor that is almost twice as big as any I've painted before. It's a painting from an area of Denali National Park in Alaska, and at 48 x 24", it's significantly larger than you commonly see watercolor paintings.

Denali National Park, 48 x 24"

This is an area of the park known as Polychrome Pass, with 3 caribou grazing on the right side of the foreground. I painted it as a very special commission to be a 20th anniversary gift from a husband to his wife. I'm honored and rewarded with the knowledge that this piece will be treasured and enjoyed by their family for many years, hopefully for generations.

This area of the park is meaningful to the sweet couple because of a camping trip they enjoyed there, but it was actually pretty fortuitous that I had photographed the same area of the park in 2017, and was able to use my own photos, as well as my client's, to create the scene. I believe my landscape paintings are always better when the location is somewhere I've been, and it makes them more enjoyable to paint, as well.

Sandy commonly sits by my side while I paint, often watching what I'm doing. She's such sweet company and the kindest critic.

Of course, John framed it beautifully.

Watercolor Exhibition at TAG in High Point- Reception Sept. 5th!

Sand Troopers, 21 1/2 x 10"

I'm most pleased to share that my painting, Sand Troopers, was accepted into the Watercolor Society of North Carolina's Annual Juried Exhibition, which is being held at The Art Gallery at Congdon Yards in High Point this year. This show will feature 70 paintings by North Carolina artists, which were selected from hundreds of entries. It's an honor to get in and I'm grateful!

Are you a current or former student who would like to help others decide about taking my classes? Or maybe you've purchased my art or hired me for a commission?

Please consider leaving me a review on Google. :)

My husband, John, and I just returned from a trip to the Great Lakes, mostly in Michigan, but we also continued our exploration of Lake Superior into Wisconsin and Minnesota. I can't say enough wonderful things about the scenery and climate around Lakes Michigan, Superior, and Huron in July and August. With the crystal-clear waters, diverse geology of the shorelines, and wildflowers blooming abundantly everywhere, I returned with many photos and sketches that I'm looking forward to painting, both in my studio and in upcoming classes.

Thanks for following along! I wish you a happy and enjoyable end of summer and beginning of fall. Remember to reach out any time with questions or comments. And if you're one of my students, keep your brushes wet and hope to see you soon!

All my very best,

Laura
