The Giants (film screening)

The Extraordinary Story of Bob Brown and The Forest

Saturday, June 3 from 6-9pm

Queanbeyan Uniting Church

Be inspired to take action for this year’s World Environment Day by attending a screening of Bob Brown’s biopic The Giants occurring alongside a showcase of local environmental groups.

Tickets are $10, $15 or $20 depending on what attendees are able to contribute, with all proceeds to be split between local not-for-profits.

The film will screen from 7pm. Before and after the screening there will be an opportunity to talk to local leaders who are passionate about the environment and working towards a sustainable planet.

The Giants screening is part of Project Alchemy, a cross-disciplinary arts project to build community connection across south-east Australia.

Project Alchemy artist Helen Ferguson is following Bob Brown’s catch cry: “Don’t get depressed, get active!”. “I hope this film inspires others to take action and connects more people with urgent climate conversations,” Ms Ferguson said. “Plus, it is an awesome and powerful film not to be missed.”

Project Alchemy is facilitated by Canberra based Rebus Theatre and involves artists from Bega Valley Shire, Eurobodalla Shire, East Gippsland, Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council, and the ACT. It is made possible thanks to funding from the Australian Government for the Black Summer Bushfire Grant Program. Rebus is also supported by Ainslie and Gorman Arts Centres and the ACT Government.

Hot and cold drinks will be available from the fundraising licensed bar at The Queanbeyan Hive from 5-7pm, across the road from Queanbeyan Uniting Church. Southern Harvest Association is providing dinner and dessert boxes made from 100% local ingredients which can be purchased as an add-on to movie tickets.

Possum skin cloak/blanket stories: darning & yarning with Aunty Matilda House

It is amazing what can come out of a good yarn and a cuppa tea, and yes a bit of work! A huge thanks to all that made this possible.

Special thanks to Aunty Matilda, Amanda Renolds (who travelled from the coast), Rose Marin from Southern Tableland Arts, The Rotary Club of Jerrabomberra, The Queanbeyan Hive, The possums that returned to us from a foreign land and all those that came to be part of this extraordinary event. We began the journey to work together to create something very special. Through group work during this workshop the layout of the pelts was determined and the stories to be depicted emerged. Although not complete, the sewing process has begun.

"This project is supported by the Country Arts Support Program, a devolved funding program administered by Southern Tablelands Arts on behalf of the NSW Government"
