Pairing of the Month

Our La Crescent wine, a light-bodied dry white, features a traditional summer citrus fruit taste profile with a crisp, refreshing bite. This versatile wine pairs exceptionally well with light, fresh flavors such as salads, chicken, seafood, light pasta dishes, and risottos. This month, we recommend enjoying La Crescent with our Curried Chicken Salad.

Grape Growth Update

BEFORE AFTER

Current Grape Growth Stage:   Vine Combing and Leaf Thinning

We are currently in the vine combing and leaf thinning stage, a crucial period for our grapes as they ripen. Grape vines like to grow horizontally along the cordon for maximum stability and strength, securing themselves to each other with tendrils which are extraordinarily strong.  As the vines stretch across the cordon and the leaves multiply, the grape clusters have a hard time getting any sunlight, as you can see in this photo.   The crowded conditions also obstruct air circulation, leading to the growth of fungus and disease.  So we must comb each vine, pulling down the horizontal growth while removing excess leaves around the fruit zone as well (~250+ man hours of work).   Managing the growth of the vines and leaves to ensure proper shoot positioning and balanced growth while maximizing sun exposure and air movement in the fruit zone is essential for cultivating high-quality grapes for this year's vintage.

Overall, the weather this year has been fantastic….so far!  Our vineyard has set a new Growing Degree Day (GDD) record of 1000 GDDs from 1 April to the end of June and everything is way ahead of schedule.  This could result in a superb vintage of wine next year.  Prayers for continued good weather for the rest of the season are much appreciated.
