Many Thanks to Community Garden Donors |
We wish to give a hearty "THANK YOU!" to the local folks who stepped forward to donate $80 a piece to fund a garden bed for a low-income Windsor family or senior citizen in the Town Green Community Garden.
Every year Windsor Garden Club offers roughly 25 of its 72 garden beds for free to Windsor residents who could not otherwise afford the $80 annual bed rent. The beds go to families with young children, and also senior citizens, who live in apartments or other housing with no place to garden. They use the beds to grow their own produce and herbs to feed their families. |

This year, WGC had a total of 11 families and seniors in need of a sponsored garden bed. We put out the call in this newsletter, in our Windsor Garden Club Facebook group, and in the Windsor California Community Facebook group and the Windsor, CA, & Local Families Facebook group. And our community answered!
A big thanks to donors Ann Wallace, Valerie Pustorino, Barbara Reitz, Carla Tarazi, De Ann Sunday, Vicki Shreiner, Bill & Betsy Nachbaur, TGCG leader Kathy Matonak, TGCG leader and past WGC president Cindy Fenton, and Denise Jamison. (If I have missed a donor I apologize! Please note me at officers@windsorgardenclub.org and give me your name so I can sing your praises! - T. Hendrix, WGC President)
You are all proof that Windsor is full of good neighbors. |

April 13 is Second Saturday Workday at Town Green Community Garden |
Community Gardeners! Saturday, April 13, is the Second Saturday spruce-up morning for all bed renters. Turn out when you can from 9 AM to Noon and bring your hat, mud boots, gloves, favorite gardening tool and some water. Join your fellow gardeners in maintaining the common areas of the garden. Saturday's word is: Weeds! Let's get rid of 'em in the pathways and other common areas (outside your bed). The Town Green Community Garden Leadership Group would like to remind all gardeners to please keep their beds free of weeds, and please weed the pathways that border their beds, no matter what month it is. (Log any pathway weeding time in the volunteer hours notebook in the kiosk so you get credit for it.)
Remember, all Town Green Community Garden bed renters agree to perform 6 hours of volunteer maintenance work in the garden during the calendar year. Stay on top of it and that's two hours a month! |

April 15 is Season's Last Frost Night: Wait for It... |
The sun has finally been out! Everyone is itching to plant! But a warning here: the last "official" frost warning night, for potential freezing temperatures, is April 15 in Sonoma County. Tax day! Can you hold off planting till Tax Day? Try to! And when you do start planting: remember, the ground may not be warm enough yet to get your seeds and seedlings growing happily. A fun tip from longtime Windsor Garden Club member Glenda Castelli: sit on it! Put a section of newspaper, or a thin cloth, down on your garden soil. Take a seat. If your backside gets cold - it's too soon to plant some things, like pumpkins. Click Here for the UC Master Gardener's Planting Guide. |
