APRIL GARDENING By Judy Koehly Shade Lovers... We are fortunate to live in River Run where we have so many native trees. These wonderful trees provide shade which is most welcome in the summer heat, but it can also be a little tricky to find plants that will bloom and thrive in the shade. I’ve made a list of plants that will work for you in your shady garden areas. |

SQUIRRELS HAVE A GOOD SIDE!By Judy Koehly |
| | "Hey, I'm working here!!!" Lots of us denigrate squirrels (me included) mostly because they can be quite pesky! Think digging holes in your newly planted flower pot. However they are fun to watch, especially if they keep trying to steal birdseed from your squirrel proof feeder (I have two). And here is the important part, squirrels carry the hard seeds of hickory, pecan and oak trees far away and then bury them at a perfect depth for growth. | | |
| | "Don't look at me that way, I'm a good guy!" So remember to thank a squirrel for the beautiful hardwood forest that we call River Run! Enjoy your garden and the squirrels who keep it interesting! | | |

SPRING YARD DEBRIS PICK-UP We are currently coordinating with our vendor to finalize the date for our spring debris pick up (not to be confused with the Sunset Harbor road clean up on April 27th). Rest assured, we are working diligently to schedule this service and will announce the final clean-up date once all details are confirmed. In the meantime, we expect your cooperation in adhering to community rules regarding yard debris. It's important to note that yard debris cannot be placed at the roadside until two weeks prior to the scheduled pick-up date. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in keeping our community clean and orderly. |

FIREWISE: TIP OF THE MONTH |
As we step into April, it's crucial to focus on Firewise practices that can significantly reduce the risk of wildfire damage in our communities. This month, the spotlight is on creating and maintaining defensible space around your property. Defensible space is an area around a structure where vegetation and other debris are treated, cleared, or reduced to slow the spread of fire towards the structure. It involves trimming trees so branches are 10 feet away from other trees, removing dead vegetation and anything that can burn from around the house, and keeping roofs and gutters clear of leaves and pine needles. Creating defensible space not only helps protect your home from wildfires but also provides a safer environment for firefighters to defend your property. Implementing these measures during April is essential as we prepare for the warmer, dryer months ahead when the risk of wildfire significantly increases. By taking action now, we can work together to create a safer, more resilient community against the threat of wildfires. Stay Safe, Stay Vigilant and Stay Firewise! |

MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR Nancy Lesko Originally from West Virginia and a Marshall University graduate, lived and raised a family just outside of Pittsburgh, PA. There she worked as a paralegal, law office manager and governance and board administrator for an international scientific society. When Nancy’s husband, Les, retired as lead electrician for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Heinz Field, they looked for more temperate climate and a change of scenery. It didn’t take long for them to discover this beautiful area and promptly picked up and built a home on Oak Island. Nancy wasn’t quite ready to retire at the time which led her to look for job opportunities in the area. She stumbled across an ad working as a PT Assistant Community Manager (ACM) with CAMS. Some of the responsibilities as an ACM for River Run include assisting board members as needed, assisting the Architectural Review Committee with all phases of architectural review processes, managing the security systems and amenity accesses for residents, assisting the Social Committee with clubhouse rentals, assisting Boat/RV Storage Committee with the storage facility processes and paperwork, assisting residents with questions and concerns, and working closely with a variety of vendors. Nancy and Les are the proud parents of three children still living in the Pittsburgh area and continue to spend as much time with them as possible. Nancy will be leaving River Run the first week in April. Going forward she and her husband plan to travel more, spend time with family and friends and explore new hobbies. Nancy has enjoyed her time working in the River Run front office and has made many friends that she will miss seeing on a regular basis. She hopes to run into them at the local grocery store or beach in the future! |
