BDC Meets Navy Veteran Commander Vincent C. Kneizys, USNR |
Commander Vincent Kneizys was stationed at Bainbridge Naval Training Base as a Physics Teacher for the Naval Prep School located on the former campus of The Tome School for Boys. Commander Kneizys stopped by the Bainbridge Museum in downtown Port Deposit to bring donations of his uniforms and other things from his time on the training base for display. He was on base until about 1962 when the base was decommissioned. Looking at a picture of Memorial Hall, Commander Kneizys fondly recalled where his classroom was located inside of the building and spoke of the marvelous craftsmanship of the fixtures and details of the buildings on the Tome campus. He said that he remembers the granite, marble and intricate woodwork very well. He stayed and visited with museum staff, telling everyone that he now lives in Lititz, PA. His stories and memories were fantastic and we were so honored to hear his recollection of his time here in Port Deposit. Commander Kneizys received both the National Defense Service Medal and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal for his service. |

Port Deposit Chamber partners with the Town to Host Annual Tree Lighting with Family Fun Event! |
The BDC has partnered with the Town of Port Deposit, local businesses and community organizations to reestablish the Port Deposit Chamber of Commerce. The first official event of the Chamber was the annual tree lighting in downtown Port Deposit. This year, Community Connecting Us, The Carriage House's Martha Barchowsky, Black Forge Design Co., ProWay, Cool Beans Sandwich and Coffee Co., Port Deposit VFW Ladies' Auxiliary, and Wicked Woodwords came together to plan a free, family friendly event to decorate and light the town's Christmas Tree, host pictures with Santa, have games and crafts for kids, hand out cookies and treats. Carriage Rides through town were free and open to the public. Black Forge Design Co. and Bainbridge Development Corporation Sponsored the Carriage Rides from Fairwinds Farm. Cool Beans Sandwich and Coffee Co., Granite Run Taproom, Lee's Landing and Backfin Blues had food and drink specials. Water Witch Fire Company brought in Santa Claus, while ProWay Garage doors provided a cute and cozy miniature house for pictures with Santa. The wonderful shops in town were open for business, including The Gerry House, Wicked Woodworks, Gwendolyn's Marigold Manor and the Bainbridge and Paw Paw museums. The event was magical and felt like a scene straight from a Christmas movie. Our small town is charming and welcoming and the Chamber looks forward to hosting this event annually. |
