The Red

NEWSBRIEF

Big News! Grovel No More!

We have completed our ‘Groveling for gravel’ campaign thanks to a fabulous Rhode Island donor who made a generous matching gift that helped us reach our goal.

Steve Campbell worked long, hard days to get the job done. He added a French drain to help with water flow, and all enclosures have crushed limestone around the perimeter of their fences, and we have a lovely gravel road as well as limestone in the aisle ways. The walkways are easy to move around so caretakers are appreciative and when it rains, our animals won’t be in the mud. This was a huge project!

A Gator at The Red

No, we aren’t adding allegators to our USDA license! But we are excited to have a Gator. And it has already proven to be incredibly helpful. Caretaker, Karen Tracy’s family from Texas delivered it to the Red in June and it has already helped our caretakers, volunteers, and visitors with mobility issues! Howling thanks to Paul and Kelle Tracy!

The Gathering of the People

Wolfdogs and rich regalia made this pow wow a howling success! Howls, drumming and song combined for a real-world class event. We had perfect weather for the Gathering of the People. Mark Banks, keeper of the drum for the Southern Singers, brought a wonderful group of talented and beautiful singers all richly dressed. Joe Whitefeather played his flute. The wolfdogs joined in a short howl to kick things off. Our sacred gathering place in a shady corner of the property proved to be the perfect location for this and many other special events to come. We are hoping to do this event again in the Fall timeframe.

401 Finds Their Home

The lovely ‘401 Girls’ (named by Rhode Island residents after their area code) have settled in.  These beautiful girls are still learning boundaries. Wiley is the braver of the two.  Willow is the shy shadow, a few steps behind her sister.  These girls both need work but are both doing very well. We are looking to expand their enclosure so we can work with them separately or separate them if same sex aggression becomes a real concern.  Either way, they have become quite the super stars at The Red and its fun having puppies around!

Art and Wolfdogs

Christopher Walden, a renowned wildlife artist, has chosen The Red as his charity of choice for his upcoming exhibit. His exhibition is September 8th at the Middletown Art Center and we will be able to present who we are and what our mission is to those attending his show. His artwork will include our animals, including Wiley and Willow, the 401s! We are honored to be his charity of choice and are so thankful for his support. We will also be at the Middletown Art Center Sept. 9th for the art fair, and we will have our ambassador animals with us. This is a wonderful example of the caliber people we are attracting.

Nick Has Arrived!

The house is getting full with more animal support. Nick Rodriguez has joined his girlfriend, Caretaker Erin McCleary, as another support for our animal team. He is creative, outgoing and has a ‘get it done’ attitude. (We think Nick enjoys the Gator as much as Mike Pflieger.) He has a huge smile and a willing heart, and he happens to be accepted by some of our more challenging animals. Welcome home, Nick!

Want to Ride with Me?

From Board President Susan Vogt

My car permanently smells of dead things. That’s right. The 4 deer carcasses that leaked in my far back seat kicked off an all new low for me. And I regularly go to La Soupe in Cincinnati where we are gifted 100s of pounds of raw meat for our animals. This is a blessing for the pups. Not so much for anyone who rides with me. Some smells just don’t go away…LOL.

Cubs and Wolfies

We had our first cub scout group at the Red in June. 25 scouts and 35 parents and siblings gave our team a logistical challenge, but we managed it quite well. We used the entire property and broke the group in half and then in 1/4s. We hiked, we met ambassador animals in the gathering spot and then the wolf wagon rode kids to see the animals. It was smooth and a nice opportunity to educate the little guys. These events provide much needed funds to support our animals all while educating about wolfdogs.

Get the Facts. Join a Tour.

So many people are misrepresenting animals, calling wolfdogs wolves, and passing off misinformation as fact. Our monthly Tuesday night tours are an excellent way to learn the facts. We have examples of adoptable low-contents, as well as mid-contents and highs. We can share the differences in traits and behaviors. But they are all dogs. Come join us for a tour. Or plan your own private event.

We Have Busted Our Seams!

We plan to build our final enclosures. A double-wide for the 401 Girls and three more enclosures that we hope not to fill. That’s right. A corporate volunteer workday will likely be driving this effort soon. The 4 enclosures will complete our pod and enable us to say "yes" to an animal in need. We are thankful for a very special Rhode Island donor who is helping us kick off another fundraising campaign for this effort.

Animal Sponsorships at The Red

Board Secretary Kelly Thacher worked hard to develop an exciting sponsorship program for followers to be able to connect with, and help support, animals at the Red. Her hard work paid off. In just over a week, we brought in $5015 in sponsorship dollars from people who love our animals. Sponsors all receive a beautiful Douglas Glidden digital photo of their animal, a certificate of sponsorship and updates on their animal. This enables them to feel a connection with our beautiful pups and help us in their care. The program has already been a huge success, and it was initially started to help us cover costs of flea/tick and heart worm meds. Our page is full of such big-hearted folks that we are able to start a nest egg for future meds and vetting needs. Some sponsorship levels included official Red merchandise like wolf stuffies, hoodies and hats. It’s not too late to join the program and sponsor your favorite Red resident. Many supporters sponsored several animals. As a 501c3 these sponsorships are tax deductible and a great way to connect on a personal level.

If you like to sponsor an animal, head on over to www.rrh-project.com/sponsor-an-animal. If you can’t decide on which one to choose, visit www.rrh-project.com/copy-of-our-animals. Each animal has a link to the sponsorship page in their bio.

As always, we are blessed with great volunteers/staff/caretakers/board members and followers. Positive energy abounds at The Red! Come see for yourself.

As a new 501c3, with monthly operating expenses and food and vet care for nineteen animals, we are in need of monthly sponsors. Operations are costly.  We are small with a mighty and loyal following. But we are still small.  Can you help us grow our network?  Can you help us gain more donors?  We encourage you to become a Friend of The Red by being a monthly sponsor to help us do more. Your dollars go 100% to the animals. We remain gratefully yours.
