Seasons Greetings “For a seed to achieve its greatest expression, it must come completely undone. The shell cracks, its insides come out and everything changes. To someone who doesn't understand growth, it would look like complete destruction.” ― Cynthia Occelli |

Are you feeling ready? To come out of your 'shell' or "shel - ter"? We have lots of wonderful creative experiences to encourage you 'out' metaphorically and physically. Engaging with the 'Creative Process' is much like 'coming undone' It can feel exposing and often we don't like what we see or do to start with. Once we accept this as part of the process and move beyond it we start to reap the benefits of our hard work and creative cultivation. Following this process together in a supportive group out in the natural environment can really accelerate growth and artistic development, especially over the course of a 'year' from planting the initial seeds of inquiry to harvesting work and celebrating the end of the year. Thats why we thought we would offer a seasons long package to our Creative Gathering sessions - 8 sessions at a discounted rate of £35 per session when signing up for all 8 sessions. Please email us if this is of interest. We start with our first Creative Gathering of 2023 with 'Yellow - Pops of Colour and Pastels' . This year the themes have an associated colour, a hint of process and a suggested medium. See below the themes for the SOOA year long gatherings. We have many interesting Special Guests that will join us to share their practice, offer a prompt or simply join us to discuss the ebbs and flows of working seasonally outdoors. |

Photos John Hersey "As a visual artist, a mother, and creative director of Lancaster & Cornish, I spend much of my time seeking connections. I am drawn to the links between disciplines and the invisible line between art and science as a way to understand the really BIG things in the context of our everyday. I make plant dyed silk ribbons and textiles reflecting the beautiful landscape and seascapes of Cornwall, echoing in colour natures seasonal palette. The resulting silks are deeply embedded in the movements of the tidal river and sea, two dimensional representations of the landscape, using foraged, grown and fairly traded pigments and plants. branches and leaves. The links between landscape, art and science provide me with a seasonally evolving colour and textural palette." Collaboration is a core value at SOOA. Collaborations with creativity, with the natural world and by no means least the collaborations with other artists. Feeling we are very much part of a global community, the collaboration with an artist on the other side of the world held a beautiful and poignant seasonal significance, as we entered into our winter months in the UK, Spring was rising up in the Southern Hemisphere. The Australian Outback is home and creative playground to Artist Jamila Hume. Via FaceTime Jamila and SOOA began to plan an alla Prima oils course that would herald in the blooms coinciding with our Floral May festivals here in Cornwall. Read more about Jamilas beautiful life affirming practice and sensate and vibrant impasto oil paintings that pay homage to the petals and buds that we are gifted with seasonally across the globe. |

Jamila Hume " In the Spring the heart finds its morning and is refreshed" I feel the collective sigh when spring arrives. The sudden delights of colour, the fluttering of fresh foliage on plum trees, the arresting sight of a wattle in full bloom, how it unapologetically occupies centre stage set against the blue sky, reminds us all that we are limitless possibilities. And I am here for it.

"My art pays homage to the colours, aromas, gestures and pause extended to us by nature in full bloom. I am a self-taught painter and for as long as I can remember my one dream has been to paint large, vibrant oil paintings that are luxurious in texture and colour and that express whimsical movement. I was born in England to a British mother and Moroccan father. As a family we moved to Vancouver, Canada where I was raised and attended university. In 2010, I immigrated to Australia. In 2017, following a long career as an anthropologist working in the resources sector, I decided that it was time to pursue my childhood dream of painting. |
I relocated to Florence, Italy where I rented a flat and studio space. I spent just over 18 months painting and touring galleries, museums, and the Tuscan hills. |
I love rich deep colours and often spend many days per week mixing up new colours and palettes. I find inspiration in a single flower petal; a large, rambling gardenscape; or a gestural bouquet of fresh, local flowers. I paint freely with my palette knife. I apply a very thick layer of oil paint and start the visual journey by first adding foliage and then responding to the blending and bleeding of colours. My process is akin to a stream of consciousness: one gestural mark leads to another, the colours change as they pick up the background colour or the adjacent marks; the painting emerges over a series of days. |
I paint full-time in my studio in the Outback of Australia. In addition to selling directly from my studio, I regularly exhibit and sell in solo and group shows in commercial and regional galleries. My hope is that my art brings people to a pause and that every single time they look upon one of my pieces, they find something new. I am delighted to know that my work resides in homes across the world. To follow along and learn more, visit me here : @jamilahume_art (instagram) or www.jamilahumeart.com |

The morning will be spent collecting pigments from a local site, exploring the geology and ethical and ecological implications of using hand-gathered earth pigments. We will then experiment with different processing methods and make simple paint. This course sells out so book early to avoid disappointment.

Our attention will focus on wildflowers and foliage while our practice will be geared to mixing colours and creating really fluid loose and rapid works. So much of what creates a beautiful unique painting pivots around courageous expression, personal story, and composition.
