COMMITTEE

Greeting Club Sisters!

The NACWC has always been in the forefront when it comes to our Democracy and this year is no exception!  Our committee is committed to providing information to you regarding the well-being of our people and asking for your action in our communities!

Our committee believes 2020 is a matter of life and death for People of Color especially, African Americans.  We must engage in the democratic process on all levels: local, state and national!  We think our vote doesn’t count, but it does!!

Some candidates have won with less than 300 votes.

Now, to the most critical event of 2020, the upcoming elections!  We have local and state elections that are very important.  Every seat in the US House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate is up for re-election.  Learn the issues and the candidates to ensure they have the same values as you and make an informed decision in November.  Many states have primaries. Be sure to participate in them too.  Everyone must VOTE this year. Your Vote Does Count. Partner with your local NAACP for voter registration assistance. NAACP will come to events you are having.  Make sure our neighbors get to the polls.  You can also be Poll Watcher to ensure everyone is being treated fairly.  Club Sisters this is not new to us.

We have been fighting for what is right, true, and just since 1896!!

Let’s create a stir about this election year!  Let’s pray for the NACWC!  We will make a difference in this Country!

President Brooks Smith has asked that we document our work by capturing data of the Census mobilization.  We want to talk with as many of  our friends, family, congregations, etc. as possible to let them know how important the process is.  Please capture the number of people you talked with on a separate Statistical Sheet titled “Census”.

We are asking all State Statisticians to assist us by getting this data from your clubs. Our committee will be reaching out to Statisticians, to see if there are any questions.

The first democratic process we must be a part of is the U.S. Census which begins this month.  It began in Alaska in January. Every household must be counted by completing the Census form.  Our Latino immigrants may also complete the census form. It will be up to us to ensure our families, congregations, friends, and communities complete the census form.  There is minimal funding for in-person visits to homes, so

The Census determines:

1. The funding each state will receive from the federal government for the next 10 years.  These funds are used for infrastructure, roads, Medicare/Medicaid funding, etc.

2. The redistricting of our communities which in-turn could increase or decrease the number of federal representatives each state will have for the next 10 years.  Redistricting will be completed in 2021.

Your State Senate

After the 2020 Census, redistricting will occur, with congressional districts redrawn for the 2022 through 2030 elections. In many states, this process is controlled by the state legislature, subject to gubernatorial veto. When one party controls the process, this can lead to gerrymandering, where district lines are set to maximize that party’s control in Congress.

This three-part map lets you see the current party in control of the Senate in each state. You can also make a forecast for each of the 44 states holding an election in 2020. Use the 2021 map to see party control based on your forecast.
