Foraging opportunities to keep your p'let engaged!

In the wild, parrotlets are constantly involved in the activity of foraging. Here are a couple of low cost ideas to provide your feathered family member a little variety in their foraging quest.

How about creating a cereal string to keep them busy?

Make sure that you choose a low sugar, no salt, type of cereal. One with a hole through the center works well.

Be sure to use string that your bird can chew through should they become entangled.

What about running a bamboo skewer through the bars for a little foraging opportunity? You can get the bamboo skewers from the Dollar Store and load it up with freeze dried treats, fresh fruit, a lettuce leaf, etc.

As an additional safety feature, snip off the pointy end of the skewer so there is no danger of being poked or pricked for you or your birds.

Don't forget to use the top of your cage as a foraging location...using millet and other goodies that can be pulled through the bars will provide your little acrobat with a challenge.

How about a different seed feeder to reduce waste?

I don't know about you, but I absolutely detest waste! Needless to say, our little p'lets can certainly waste a lot of food looking for just the right morsel. I ran across an idea that has provided for less waste while allowing for a generous amount of seed so that I do not have to spend as much time refilling my seed containers.

Below are the links for the screw top and the plates that I use.

This feeder consists of a small soda bottle, the screw on top for the seed to flow through, and a plate to catch the falling seed as my parrotlets feed.

The only caution that I would add is to make sure that this feeder is not is a zone where your bird's droppings will contaminate the seed.

Of course I have multiple birds but I have found this little gadget has reduced the seed waste as my p'lets feed. It also provides for a bigger amount of seed to be available than is in most feeders. The transparent bottle allows me to easily see when I need to refill the container.

Although I have included the information about this resource before, I felt that it was well worth my featuring it again. The trending discussions and interactive communications featured via this website make it a resource worth exploring. The access to other parrotlet owners with their plethora of experience is helpful to anyone wanting to be a part of an online "parrotlet community".

Featured Babies...

These little guys may not be much to look at now but just wait! In a few short weeks they will feather up into the most beautiful little pets! Truly the ugly duckling into a swan, (or at least parrotlet), story. Contact me if you are interested in adding one of these future beauties to your family. I would be happy to provide pic updates as they mature...

Additionally, I have this little 2.5 year old male who recently lost his mate. He is very calm and will make a wonderful companion pet. Contact me if you are interested in him and would like additional information and/or pics.
