Let's talk about PRESENCE! |
Thank you for choosing the Loving Leadership newsletter from Jessica Lightbourne Coaching as your go-to resource for personal and professional development! This month we are talking about PRESENCE! Presence? Don't you mean presents? Well (warning, cheesy mom joke): your presence is a present! YOU are the gift! How do you show up for yourself and others? As leaders, coaches, entrepreneurs, executives, and all around baddies, being intentional about how we show up can be a game changer. What shows up when you do? What energy do you bring into a room? And...how does that impact your goals, level of influence and success? |
Presence can be described as being attentive and mindful. When you are paying close attention, you are being present. When you are being present, you exude a powerful presence. Presence is vital to successful relationships and experiences in general, and if we are not fully present with ourselves, or others, we are not accessing all of our power: we do not have access to the experience of living life at its fullest. In coaching conversations, coaches must come to the conversation fully present. This means that they can focus fully on their client, as active listener and observer. Coaching conversations are #allaboutyou (the client) and #notaboutme (the coach), which allows for innovative solutions to emerge. Leaders also benefit profoundly from this coaching approach to connect with their team members. As a leader, you will be most effective when all of your needs are met, allowing you to be fully present and available to address your team's needs. I imagine you have either experienced or observed the difference between a boss who is stressed out and one who is at ease - the former will not be able to be fully present and effective, while the latter creates an environment for the team to thrive - the impact is immense. |

When we think of executive presence and gravitas, the same applies, simply more intensely. Gravitas and executive presence requires: 1) confidence 2) humility and 3) altitude. When a leader shows up confidently, humbly and with an eagle eye's view of the big picture and the details, they demonstrate gravitas and command attention when they enter a room and when they choose to speak. Self-leadership is the foundation of all leadership. Whether you are the leader of your household, a movement or a Fortune 500 company, you will benefit from slowing down, being mindful and taking care of your needs so that you can create a life of satisfaction. |

Coaching Questions & Activity: Becoming aware of how we are perceived can be challenging, considering that 85% of people are not naturally self-aware, according to Tasha Eurich, author of Insight: The Surprising Truth About How Others See Us, How We See Ourselves, and Why the Answers Matter More Than We Think. Thank goodness for coaches and leaders who allow for new levels of awareness, uncover blind spots, and cultivate "ah ha moments"! Thank goodness that once you become aware, you can start to adjust and make changes that support who you want to become. Reflect or journal on the following questions to build some awareness about your own level of presence: When in conversation, do you listen or talk more? How often does your mind wander when you are talking to someone else? How often do you multitask? When was the last time you took a break and did nothing? Close your eyes and take a deep breath: what thoughts, feelings and body sensations are you having in this moment?
Tips & Resources: There are a great number ways to fully source yourself so that you show up fully present. Here are a few resources to get you started: Listen to this short (6 min) podcast on Restoring Through Silence from the inspiring Trisha Hershey and the The Greater Good Science Center at the University of California, Berkeley here. Create a bespoke Leader Care Checklist to remind yourself of the things you can do to fill your cup so that you can be present for yourself and those you care about. Check out this free ICLI Basic Needs Checklist to get you started. Set a 2 minute timer, close your eyes and breathe before you move on to the next thing. It has been proven that all you need is 5-10 minutes of meditation to have a significant impact on your quality of life. Even the most busy CEO has 5 minutes to spare, and science shows that's all you need to reset and ground yourself. Check out this adorable 2 minute video on meditation from Twill and a short and useful article from mindfulness.org on mindful writing.
