Matereality Marathon, here we go!

Greetings!

I am here to kick off my first ever Matereality Marathon!

“What is a Matereality Marathon?” you might be wondering. I can explain. This email message is also recapped in a brief video.

This is me “working out loud” to keep myself accountable and to make it easy for others to pick up anything useful.

Earlier in 2022 I shared a methodology called “Matereality,”  spelled a little differently than the typical ESG (environmental, social, and governance) materiality in that I embedded “reality” into materiality. There’s lots more I could say about that, and I’ve said a lot already,  gathered here  on my website.

I’ve been working for a few months now on the next assessment, on the global food company Danone. But I’ve gotten stalled for a few reasons.

I decided, why not light a fire under my tush and get it done by way of a Matereality Marathon?

Over the next five days I will be exploring the fundamental questions of Matereality:

  • What does the company say their purpose is?

  • What do they actually do to make money?

  • And what does the world need them to do?

Every day for the the rest of the week — Monday through Friday — I’ll publish an updated video and recap embedded in the deck, here. I’ll also be putting updates on my Medium page so if you’re following me there, you’ll catch the action. (I won’t email you like this all week—that’s too bonkers.)

Anybody who really likes to watch paint dry can watch me build the slides during the day, or check in at the end of the day to see the headlines.

The object of the game here — my purpose — is to foster the shift to an economy that works in service of life.

If you’d like to help, there are a few ways that you can and I would love it if you did. The first is to digest what I’m putting out there, and share anything that you find useful, either in the Danone assessment itself or in the previous assessments that I’ve made available. Feel free to tag me (or not) on LinkedIn, Medium, Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook.

The other way you could help is by providing feedback in the Google slides, or in the comments on my Medium articles as the updates emerge (I will be updating daily the list called Matereality + other expensive (yet free!) deliverables) on Medium. Or you can leave comments on any of the Matereality videos .

I’m really open to hearing what you think.

I do all of this Matereality work unfunded — it’s just something I think needs doing and after years of mainstream ESG consulting I feel like it’s time to put it to good use. Hence lighting a fire under my butt to get this one done, because I think it’s important.

On that note, another way you can help if you like what you see is to contribute whatever you like into my tip jar .

I’m kinda nervous. I hope I can provide something useful because we really need a global food industry that works in service of life...

I hope to see you somewhere along the sidelines. Maybe hand me a glass of water, remind me to keep breathing and relax, or weigh in with questions and feedback.

Thanks for coming along the journey!

Yours in connectedness,

Lorraine

P.P.S. I updated my website with links to all previous newsletters, here, since you had to dig in your email or know where the magic door was before.

P.P.P.S. The image in the banner is a photo from the last time I set out on a five-day marathon. It was on foot and a dear friend biked along for support—that’s her up ahead—which helped as there were some tough, bleak, confusing moments. That was a warm-up!
