November 2022

November is a time for reflecting on things we are grateful for and the blessings we have received. For me, it is a time to remember the days gone by and the years ahead. My memories of past Thanksgiving dinners are very special to me, and I take time to reflect on the family and friends who have gone on before us. One memory I have of Thanksgiving: my mother did not enjoy making holiday dinners, so I have been preparing our family’s Thanksgiving dinner since I was very young. I remember calling my aunt to ask how to prepare the turkey, and she forgot to tell me to take out the giblets. It still makes me laugh to this day. Family is very important to me, and I am thankful for my time with family and friends. I am also thankful for getting to show my art at the gallery. Please take time during this holiday season to spend time with your family, and tell them how much you love them.

The November Featured Artists are Linda Weiss, fused glass and Marcella (Marcy) Boushelle, water media. Linda spent her career as a water-resources engineer with the U.S. Geological Survey. She has worked with stained glass and later fused glass for about 30 years. You can read more of her bio below. Marcy is a mixed media artist and describes her work as abstract and impressionistic. Marcy says her art has been heavily influenced by the Impressionist painters Cezanne, Degas, and Cassatt, and the Modernists like Matisse, Kandinsky, Klein and Modigliani. Today’s influences are Jean Arnold for her energy of movement and motion and Martin Kippenberger because he can—he has guts. Her art has been used in several of the Better Call Saul episodes. I really love how she creates her abstract lady paintings.

The Salon Show for November features Marlies Diels (ceramics), Lauren Deyo (mixed media, encaustic collage), and a tribute to the life and accomplishments of Jeff Warren.  His family blessed the gallery with some of his original paintings and prints. If you have ever wanted one of his pieces, now is the opportunity to buy one at a discounted price. We are honored to have Lauren Deyo, return to the gallery with all new art. Her encaustic collage paintings have outstanding colors and papers that she has specifically picked for each piece. We will also have the pottery and ceramics of Marlies Diels. Every creation is unique yet functional. She likes to combine beauty, bold colors, and function in each piece.

The November ARTScrawl First Friday reception is November 4 from 5–8 pm with Tractor Brewing sponsoring the event.

At the beginning of November, we are also hanging new art with artist wall changes and introducing two new artists: Maurice Hudson (pastel) and Gwenda McLamb (oil). Check our website in the coming days for more information on these artists.

A Note on the November Salon Show

by Linda Weiss

The Gallery ABQ presents the November 2022 Salon Show, featuring Marlies Diels (New Clay Creations), Lauren Deyo (A Fresh Perspective), and Jeff Warren (A Tribute to Jeff Warren).

Jeff, who was a member of The Gallery ABQ, died August 30, 2022.The Gallery ABQ is featuring his dramatic and fanciful work as part of the First Friday reception in the salon on November 4, 2022, from 5-8:00 pm.  Join us as we pay tribute to the life and styles of Jeff Warren, including photo-realism, surrealism, portraits of children, and still life, all with an expression of Jeff’s sense of humor. One can also see glimpses of Jeff’s 25-year acting career in the drama of his paintings.

Jeff’s ideas came from everywhere, including dreams. For example, the phrase “fork in the road,” captured his imagination, and was the spark for a new painting. When asked, “What do you like most about your painting style?” Jeff said, “Clarity. I like realism. I am careful and deliberate with my brush stroke and my choice of color." The artist was a big fan of Salvadore Dali, and some of Jeff’s paintings are a tribute to him. These include “Hello, Dali,” “Dali’s Bar and Grill,” and “The Garden of Salvadore Dahlia.”  Jeff was also inspired by artists such as Maxfield Parrish, Vincent van Gogh, and Johannes Vermeer. Jeff’s family has generously donated his collection to The Gallery ABQ. The Gallery will be offering these paintings to the public at the reception on November 4 at reduced cost.  Jeff will  be missed by all.  Come by and purchase your very own oil painting by Jeff Warren.

In the main gallery, the Featured Artists are Linda Weiss (fused glass) and Marcella Boushelle (mixed media/watercolor).

Featured Artist for November 2022

Linda Weiss

(Fused Glass)

Linda Weiss is one of the Featured Artists at The Gallery ABQ First Friday reception on November 4, 2022, from 5-8:00 pm. This reception will be sponsored by Tractor Brewing, promising a fun night. Hors d’oeuvres will also be provided.

Linda moved to Albuquerque in 1997 after having moved throughout the United States for careers with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Trained in Civil Engineering/Hydrosystems, Linda received her BSCE from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and her MSCE from Virginia Polytechnic and State University. Her positions before retirement were Water-Resources Director for the USGS in Lincoln, Nebraska, and Albuquerque.

Before discovering fused glass, Linda made stained glass windows for her friends and family for about 20 years. Her stained-glass windows are in peoples’ houses from Massachusetts to Nevada, Illinois, South Carolina, and New Mexico. But when Linda took a fused glass jewelry class, she was hooked. Linda fell in love with how the properties of glass could be changed by firing it in a kiln. Besides the bright, happy colors that can be achieved through fused glass techniques, glass that has been fired in a kiln takes on new shapes and properties that are almost always a surprise.

Inspired by Dale Chihuly (glass plants) and glass classes offered over Zoom during the Pandemic (glass plates and sculptures), Linda has been trying new ways to look at and use glass. Come to The Gallery ABQ on November 4, 2022, from 5-8:00 pm, to meet Linda and the other artists, to pick up some one-of-a-kind holiday presents (including menorahs and mezuzahs) and to have a nice evening out.

Introducing New Artist

Maurita Hudson

(pastel)

Beginning in November, Maurita Hudson is joining The Gallery ABQ. Learn more about Maurita on her gallery webpage (link below). Here is an excerpt from her bio:

"To this day I love the forms of softness and motion that I see around me. Our beautiful skies in New Mexico with the billowing clouds are exciting, and I will sit and observe them for long periods of time. I rise early to catch the sunrise, or I watch for the changing light of sunset as it bursts forth with boldness of color. I never tire of the colors around me, and I am most drawn to the clouds and sunsets for subject matters." Below right, Glorious.

"We never sit anything out.

We are cups, constantly and quietly being filled.

The trick is, knowing how to tip ourselves over

and let the beautiful stuff out."
