A Look Back At ASA Books Giving Back In August |
August was a month of giving back for ASA Books. We planted seeds and watched them grow and gave back, all in the same season! ASA Books Was In The Garden and made a total of 3 donations of vegetables to our local community food pantry. Donations included bushels of collard greens and kale, yellow and red tomatoes, hot peppers and green peppers, and cucumbers. We were grateful to give back in this way! Our garden plot at the 65th and Woodlawn Community Garden still currently has tomatoes and peppers that we will still harvest well into the fall. We plan to also donate kale and a few more bushels of collards from our home gardens before the end of our 2022 garden season! |

The John B Drake Elementary School In Chicago, IL held a wonderful Back To School event on Thursday, August 18th. ASA Books was proud to donate 10 books to students and families. We are looking forward to building a partnership with the Drake School with a goal of having ASA Books part of the student library and kindergarten and 1st grade classrooms. This potential partnership will be a manifestation of blending passion with purpose. Solonge Robinson, author, and co-owner of ASA Books is a Portfolio Manager with the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) and has been for the past 11 years. The Drake School is located on CHA's Dearborn Homes Housing Development, which educates many of the children in the Dearborn Home community. The vision here is for our stories to reach the children in this amazing community and we will work hard to make this happen! |

Volunteering For An AMAZING Organization: TDS |
On Friday, August 26th, Solonge Robinson had the pleasure of reconnecting with her graduate school professor, Dr. Kurt Thurmaier, who is the Founder and President of Tanzania Development Support (TDS) whose mission is to "support community-identified educational improvements for youth, especially girls, in the Mara region as a way to escape poverty." Solonge volunteered for the morning shift in Dekalb, IL, and was amazed at the variety of items available for the community to enjoy. Seeing Dr. Thurmaier, his wife Jeanine, and their team in action was a testament that, through community, you can create the power to change lives. Their annual yard sale raised $11,100 during this wonderful 3-day yard sale. To learn more about TDS and the wonderful work they are doing on behalf of children in the Mara region and how you can support it, please visit https://www.tdsnfp.org/the-mara. |
