“I swear honey, you’re so lucky! You do one sit-up and loose 30 pounds; I look at food and I gain five pounds—" The thyroid gland, directly controls most aspects of your daily life. From metabolism to mood, having a healthy thyroid is essential to having a healthy life; yet 20 million Americans have some sort of thyroid disorder. Luckily, regular use of Red Light Therapy (RLT) is proven to keep your thyroid at it’s peak performance.
The thyroid, a butterfly-shaped, endocrine gland in the neck, is important in releasing and controlling vital hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). These specific hormones control metabolism, the body’s process of turning food into cellular energy. Aside from just digestive function, controlling the body’s metabolic rate, controls the heart, brain development, muscle function, bone maintenance and even fertility.
If too much T4 is produced, Hyperthyroidism, the heart rate will quicken as well as the churning of the intestine, leading to frequent bowel movements or diarrhea. People with hyperthyroidism experience unintentional weight-loss, heat intolerance, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, muscle weakness and even sore eyes. If this sounds like you, it is advised to stay away from caffeine, alcohol, gluten, soy and iodine-rich foods like fish, shellfish, iodized salt, seaweed, kelp, dairy, food containing red dye, and egg yolks. Instead eat foods high in selenium like Brussel sprouts, cabbage, collard greens, kale, arugula, bok choy, cauliflower, broccoli, Brazil nuts, egg whites, oatmeal, spinach; and foods high in iron like raisins, dark chocolate, beef, chicken, turkey and pork.
If too little T4 is produced, Hypothyroidism, the function of the cells and organs slow, resulting in constipation, tiredness, feeling cold, weight gain, poor concentration and even depression. If this sounds like you, it’s advised to stay away from excessive sodium, alcohol, processed foods, gluten, soy, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, bok choy, kale, and fatty foods like butter, mayonnaise, margarine, and anything fried. Instead eat iodine-rich foods like cheese, milk, iodized salt, saltwater fish, seaweed, eggs; selenium-rich foods like Brazil nuts, tuna, shrimp, beef, turkey, chicken, ham, eggs, oatmeal, brown rice; and foods rich in zinc like oysters, crab, beef, pork, pumpkin seeds and yogurt.
As thyroid issues progress, they become classified as having an autoimmune thyroid disease, or a self-destructive process in which a body’s immune system attacks the thyroid cells, as though they were foreign pathogens. In response, the thyroid gland becomes underactive, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, or overactive as in Grave’s disease. Though it’s unclear what causes thyroid disorders, there are correlations to stress, poor diet, lack of exercise, drastic changes in hormones, and chemical toxicity in the body.
Luckily, thyroid diseases are known to dissipate as hormone levels stabilize!
Regular use of RLT is proven to help the thyroid, as it interacts with biological structures, improves the anti-inflammatory response of the cells, and helps regenerate tissue. RLT triggers the mitochondria to release more energy (ATP), enabling the thyroid cells to function optimally, adjusting the hormonal supply based on the body’s needs. Specifically, RLT regenerates thyroid follicular cells, responsible for creating T3 and T4. Research has found that RLT is 70% more effective than dietary supplements alone, in increasing the T3/T4 ratio, while decreasing the need for LT4 replacement therapy. Plus, RLT stimulates the immune system to protect the body against outside invaders, such as bacteria and viruses. This reduces the presence of thyroid antibodies, while preventing autoimmune disorders from interfering with the thyroid’s normal processes.
