This year marks the 25th anniversary of PRIDE which is an annual celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer identity. It commemorates the Stonewall Riots or Stonewall Uprising in which a series of violent confrontations began in 1969 between the police and gay rights activists outside the Stonewall Inn. The first PRIDE March occurred on the one year anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. These events spurred an international movement to advance the gay rights movement. Learn more about PRIDE here. Prior to colonization, many Native American communities had more fluid ideas of gender and sexuality. Two Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender, Queer, plus (2SLGBTQ+) often had specific roles and were even considered to have unique spiritual connections. Click here to learn more about Two Spirit people. Despite being marginalized, 2SLGBTQ+ people continue to celebrate authenticity, acceptance, and love. Our program believes that it is imperative that young people in our community, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression, feel valued, safe, empowered, and supported by their peers and community leaders. We see you and we honor you! Check out 2SLGBTQ+ resources on our website: https://www.mvskokeyouth.com/2slgbtqia |
