Dear Friend Gratitude is the word that comes to mind as we start the new year. How fortunate we are to have survived 2020; a year where millions succumbed to the coronavirus pandemic. How blessed we are to have had your support in spite of the challenges of 2020. How proud we are of the women and children we support for the great strides they have made with your help. 2021 will be a better year; we embrace this idea as we continue to work hard to provide opportunities for disadvantaged women, children, and communities by giving them the stepping stones to reach new heights and change their outcomes. Talking about new heights, the arrival of the vaccine is not just an accomplishment only possible through unusual collaboration, it is also a beacon of light at the end of the tunnel. From the article: COVID-19 Vaccine FAQ: Safety, Side Effects, Efficacy by Nick Tate on WebMD.com, in Pfizer’s large clinical trial, the two doses of the vaccine were shown to be 95% effective at preventing COVID-19 cases, according to results published in The New England Journal of Medicine. Two doses of Moderna's vaccine were shown to be 94.1% effective. That’s more than twice the effectiveness of the annual flu shot, which typically carries a 40% efficacy rate. This may just be the biggest medical breakthrough of the century against the backdrop of a world that has lost over 2.2 million people to the COVID-19 virus; only time will tell. And if you are skeptical about the vaccine, ponder the alternative. Cheers to new heights and to what is possible when we collectively work together for the greater good. Stay with us for another year of making a difference.

Nancy Amoah-Boateng was one of the first young women that UAW supported through our scholarship program. She is a an ambassador for UAW and has spoken at our annual seminars in Ghana and mentored new scholarship recipients. She graduated from the 2nd Image school in Spring, 2015, winning the award for best beauty therapist student. After graduation, she opened a beauty salon with our support, there she nurtured her skills and gave other graduates a place to start. Since then she has worked hard to further develop and expand her career working for MAC in Ghana and other multinational cosmetic companies in Africa. She currently lives in South Africa where last November she won an award for the best nail technician in her state. We are so proud of Nancy, for her commitment to excellence and her appreciation of the gift of education as a tool for empowerment "Without Upward African Woman, I wouldn't have achieved this. Thank you. I want to raise enough money, go back to Ghana and help with the foundation. Tell everyone, thank you pls. God bless you all". - Nancy |
