News from the Artist's Studio

OCTOBER 2020

We may agree that oddly, time is passing- and often not quietly. Currently, it is possible for time to pass us by. Nine months have passed and not much has been planned or executed, but yet, the narrative of this year continues to build.

So, I choose to use my time wisely, be deliberate and focus on the business of creating and selling art.

I have had several shows postponed due to the pandemic and have relied on the fabulous online promotion by team members at the galleries that represent my work.

If you are thinking of an art purchase, I know just the people to help you connect with the perfect piece or pieces. Wink;) Mine play well in groups!

NEW STUDIO

I have a new studio and it is spectacular!  I have had 11 studios in the last 7 years. This is the largest and most efficient floorplan--although messy!  Visitors are welcome:)

In my 19'x50' studio on Longboat Key, I am happily working on 15 paintings at the same time- because I can! The work belongs to DUNES, DISRUPTOR and a new family which I quickly named LIMITS.

On LIMITS

I stand firmly. The titles of my paintings are intended as reference. I have to offer a name, or how could we speak about them individually, right? My art is strictly visual and I am not intending to lead you anywhere, ever. I certainly do not want to get you there quicker than your own personal reference will, by giving you a title in which to frame the work. The purpose of the series title is to inform my direction when I pick up my tools and is applied while the series runs its course, which may be years. Each series description, which I write before I paint will tie the artworks together. When it no longer can do so, I move on to another series. The most recent example is the transition from HEAD & HEART Series to the DISRUPTOR Series. HEAD & HEART solved my problems which were inherent to my background in wallpaper and fabric design- the persistent all-over design. Breaking away was actually a struggle. The entire HEAD & HEART series was about entry and exit points and contrast of larger areas. The series lasted 2 years.

I recently saw the change to a more complex palette, longer personal contemplation involving more of my HEAD than HEART, more layers and textures and more types of mark-making. I see an expanded knowledge of structure within a landscape. I also see I have expanded the visual territory of the landscape.  I see slight moves which require extrapolation by the viewer using the information I provide. I love when people see something I am not sure I intended.  The experience being unique to each viewer, so to speak.

Alright, enough of the evolution of DISRUPTOR, of which I have completed 22 and counting.

Taking it to the next, most obvious step-

I have decided to tackle composition with a limited palette and I will allow myself to stray from the landscape- and LIMITS begins.

I have included the Google definition of LIMIT --

lim·it

/ˈlimit/

noun

a point or level beyond which something does not or may not extend or pass.

"the limits of presidential power"

Wow. Funny. Google references the presidency as an example- can't get to far from that topic, can we?

Anyway, the limits are my test.  The limits propose a challenge to my skills.  Believe it or not, this is a difficult task.  I will create a painting that gives the viewer no direction. No leads as to intention of representation is a lot harder than constructing the landscape framework to solve my compositional problems.  I want to include energy of course, but will try to do so without complex color.

Complex color-- I think I have that down pat. (toot-toot;)

WHY I LOVE IT

I chose a straight up landscape, in case the LIMITS study doesn't grab you. This has

eve·ry·thing/ˈevrēˌTHiNG/ ! - layers, depth, energy, complex color, texture, mark-making and my signature disruptors.
