Let the waves take you on the GenerationPMTO journey

Working Virtually

When we go to work each day, we grab a cup of coffee, sit down at our desks and join our first meeting with colleagues who could be anywhere from around the state, across the country or over the ocean! These virtual, face-to face meetings can be as close as our neighbors to the north in British Columbia, but, often times it’s with someone in Kansas, NYC, the Netherlands, Mexico City, Iceland, Liberia…well you get the picture. Through virtual meetings we can meet with everyone, everywhere!

It can sound exotic sometimes, having the opportunity to work with folks all over the world. It is! We have, however, become accustomed to this modern way of working. Recently, we captured this image of our FIMP team leader and a colleague working together in New York City along with a team member back home in Eugene.

You may be asking yourself if you have the technology to make this happen. The fast answer is yes! What’s needed? A smart phone or a computer/tablet with a webcam and internet access. The rest is even easier!

Shine a Light on Iceland

GenerationPMTO:  We are doing it in Iceland!

The implementation process in Iceland began in one community and after achieving mastery in the model, was rolled out to many other communities.

Today the program is led by the Government Agency of Child Protection and is reaching more than half of the nation!Icelandic parents can receive individual or group services.

Additionally, roughly 700 professionals, especially in the school system, have received brief training in GenerationPMTO skills in order to aid communities responding to behavior problems.

On the 21st of June, when the light is never ending in the north, 14 new Icelandic PMTO therapists were certified with high fidelity scores. There are now 77 therapists certified in the nation, which is valuable for the small population of Iceland. There is about one therapist for every 4,500 individuals!

Under the direction of Dr. Margrét Sigmarsdóttir, strong results are coming out of the research data collected in Iceland:

  • A paper published in 2012 showed that the number of referrals to specialist services decreased in the community where the work started, whereas referrals increased in comparison communities not implementing the method.

  • A randomized control trial published in 2014 showed that PMTO had greater reductions in child behaviour problems compared to the treatment-as-usual group.

  • A 2018 article describes the full transfer implementation approach of GenerationPMTO in Iceland, Netherlands and Denmark from the onset of implementation in each country. The results indicate fidelity ratings started in the good work range with a slight dip for the second generation and then a quick recovery to the level of the first generation. These three European nations successfully sustained the program with high fidelity.

We are thankful for our GenerationPMTO program in Iceland – parents and professionals love it!

Where we've been lately

We ♥ NYC!

June was a busy month with the CSNYC project: PTC-Reunification workshops, trainings to strengthen core skills and strategies, FIMP progress, and evidence of sustainability via newly approved and reapproved PTC-R facilitators.

Workshop participants demonstrate their range and creativity with an “emotional pose”.

Congrats, Michigan PMTO!

In June Michigan celebrated its 10th annual PMTO State Conference; Laura Rains and Ruben Parra-Cardona were fortunate to join in the festivities.

The heartwarming highlight of the 2-day conference was the Parent Panel:

“This is what every child needs.”

“This will help future generations.”

“PMTO has really given me hope.”

“It was a life changer."
