Applications are now open for Shout Out 2.0
Shout Out is a leadership and public speaking program for young people aged 17 to 25. The program is designed to improve young people's public speaking skills and help them share their experiences and views on topics they are passionate about. Originally the program was designed for young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds, but we are now excited to extend it to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people. To become a Shout Out speaker, young people need to attend a two-day intensive training program and a showcase event. To apply for the program, young people should email Sara Shengeb on sara@yacwa.org.au by 4pm, 25th of June, outlining:

  • How they meet each of the eligibility criteria
  • Why they want to join the program
  • What issues or topics they are interested in or passionate about
  • What they expect to achieve by joining the program

Youth Disability Advocacy Network (YDAN) - join the committee
If you are a young person (age 12 to 25) living with a disability in Western Australia and have a passion for disability advocacy, then YDAN want you to join their Executive Committee. The Executive Committee officers are young volunteers who meet monthly to provide the direction and vision for YDAN. They identify and discuss issues of importance to young people with disabilities, organise forums, events, and projects which may be beneficial or important to young people with disabilities. They're looking for young people with a range of skills that can help grow YDAN. If that is you or someone you know then apply through the link below! Young people with disabilities under the age of 18 are strongly encouraged to apply! Applications close 5pm, Saturday 30th of June.

Amran Abdi is Shout Out speaker and since her participation in the program has written the children's book The Rainbow Hijab. At this event, you'll have a chance to hear her story and her experience of being a Muslim woman in today's world.

Lets Talk Refugee Week
Join this interactive session to learn about what it means to be a refugee and hear the story of Mohammad Almadi, a person from a refugee background who will share his experiences and journey he has gone through to arrive in Australia. 
 
When: Wednesday 20th June, 3:30pm to 5pm 
Where: Ruth Faulkner Public Library, Progress Way, Cloverdale 
 
Light refreshment will be provided. Registrations close on Monday 18th June.

Workshops

The Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)
ASIST is a two-day interactive workshop on suicide first-aid. ASIST teaches participants to recognise when someone is at risk of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. Participants do not need any formal training to attend the workshop. ASIST can be learned and used by anyone aged 16 and older. Priority will be given to people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities (and service providers) who live and work in the City of Stirling.

 

When: 4th and 5th July, 9am to 5pm 

Where: Herb Graham Recreation Centre, 38 Ashbury Crescent, Mirrabooka

Suicide awareness skills and response workshop

The City of Cockburn is offering a free workshop to give participants age 15+ suicide awareness skills and information on relevant resources available. It is specifically tailored to those from a CALD background.

 

When: Thursday 21 June, 9am to 1pm 
Where: Yangebup Family Centre, Dunraven Drive, Yangebup

Free basic computing classes
Centacare is providing free basic computing classes to help participants improve their computer skills. The classes include:

  • How to use computers and Windows Explorer
  • Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Outlook and Excel
  • How to search the internet with web browsers
  • How to create a simple and effective resume

Safe Driver Education program 

The Safe Driver Education workshop provides participants with an overview of safe driving practices, essential road rules, how to get an Australian driver’s license and the process of purchasing a car. After successful completion of the workshop, eligible participants will receive a small amount of financial assistance to be put towards their driving tuition.

 

When: Tuesday 3rd July, 10 am to 1pm 
Where: 28 Cecil Avenue, Cannington

 

If you know someone who would like to attend the Safe Driver Education Program, please complete the referral form and return to SGP-metro@communicare.org.au. For the first time ever, a crèche will be available to eligible participants only. Spaces are limited and it is essential that children are registered.

Swimming lessons
Royal Life Saving Social WA, in partnership with Communicare’s Get Active Project are running swimming lessons at Cannington Leisureplex. The classes run every Tuesday afternoon and are restricted for Level 1 to 4 only.

 

When: 17 July to 18 September, 4.30pm – 6.30pm (swimming level dependent)

Where: Cannington Leisureplex, Wharf Street and Sevenoaks Street, Cannington
Cost: $20 (includes pool entry, a towel, goggles and swimming cap)

First Hike Project – Australian bushwalking adventure 
The First Hike project aims to introduce new arrivals to the Australian bush and the natural wonders of WA. It is a chance for people from refugee and migrant backgrounds to feel welcomed, informed and network with others who are new to WA. The project organises all transport, food and equipment. Employability skills program – Girrawheen Hub
The City of Wanneroo, in partnership with MercyCare Career Centre, is delivering a free five–week program at the Girrawheen Hub which provides job seekers with assistance to apply for work. The workshops cover strategy planning, building a job search toolkit, job searching and interviewing skills.

 

When: Tuesday 19th, 26th June, 3rd, 10th and 17th July, 2pm to 4pm

The Health Networks of the Department of Health WA invites you to attend a community consultation forum to provide your feedback on the draft WA Men's Health and Wellbeing Policy. This policy will provide direction to WA Health and its partners to deliver strategies that improve the physical, mental, social and emotional wellbeing of men and boys in WA.

Applications are now open for the 2018 Fellowship Programme for People of African Descent. The program provides participants with an intensive learning opportunity to deepen their understanding of the United Nations human rights system, instruments and mechanisms, with a focus on issues of particular relevance to people of African descent. CaLD Community Forum – Meet the Mayor and the Minister

CALD community members, cultural groups, community leaders and local agencies are invited to meet the City of Gosnells Mayor and the Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Interests at a community forum. This event is an opportunity for community members to discuss important issues. Community members can register for one-on-one consultations with the City of Gosnells and Office of Multicultural Interests.

Australian Human Rights Awards - nominations open
The Australian Human Rights Awards recognise and celebrate the extraordinary contributions of individuals, organisations and businesses to the field of human rights each year. Nominations are now open for people, organisations, government agencies and businesses that have made significant contributions to human rights in Australia. Nominations can be submitted under nine categories: the Human Rights Medal, the Young People’s Human Rights Medal, Law Award, Business Award, ‘Racism. It Stops With Me’ Award, Government Award, Community Organisation Award, Tony Fitzgerald Memorial Community Individual Award and the Media Award.

Restoring Family Links Youth Program
The Restoring Family Links (RFL) service is dedicated to re-establishing contact between family members separated by conflict, disaster and migration and to clarifying the fate of the missing. The RFL service in Australia is part of the International Red Cross Red Crescent global tracing network which operates in 190 countries. The Redcross are looking for up to five young volunteers to participate in a five-month training/community leadership program with the RFL service based in East Perth. To be eligible, applicants must be available to attend training, scheduled each Wednesday from 18th July to 19th September. Expressions of Interest (EOI) can be sent to the WA Field Officer for RFL, Melissa Di Dio at mdidio@redcross.org.au. Candidates from refugee/migrant backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply. Closing date for the EOI is Friday 6 July.  

Future Connect Voyage

Leeuwin Ocean Adventure has a new voyage named Future Connect, which invites twenty young people aged 16 to 25 raised in Western Australia (established Western Australians) and twenty young people from a CALD or refugee background who now call WA home (new Western Australians) on board.

 

When: 12th to 18th March 2019

The Leeuwin Ocean Adventure is currently seeking expressions of interest from young people. Applicants need to email philippa@sailleeuwin.com answering the following three questions (in up to 500 words):

  • Why do you want to join this voyage?
  • Have you had an experience onboard a boat/ship before?
  • What is your place of origin?

Calling all poets!
WA Poets Inc. (WAPI) organise the annual Perth Poetry Festival. One of WAPI’s goals is to provide opportunities for performers from a diverse range of poetic traditions. WAPI is looking for poets from multicultural, CALD or refugee backgrounds to read at an evening of Multicultural Voices to be held on Tuesday 14 August as part of the 2018 festival. There will also be an opportunity to join a panel discussion after the event. A small performance fee will be paid. Participants must be over 18 years old. Grants

New grants program to strengthen migrant integration
Community groups will be able to help migrants settle into Australian life with funding from a new grants program. The Turnbull Government has introduced a new $5 million grants program for measures that support social cohesion and integration of migrants into the Australian community. The Coalition’s 2018–19 Budget established the Fostering Integration Grants program to support the delivery of one-off projects and new or expanded initiatives that encourage economic and social participation of new arrivals, including activities that promote employment and participation in the broader community.
 
Applications for the grants will open in the second half of 2018 and will be advertised on GrantConnect, the government’s grant information system. For further information please call the Minister’s Office on 02 6277 7770.

Community Enhancement Grant applications are now open

The City of Perth's Community Enhancement Grants program offers up to $10,000 to facilitate a range of programs, create new partnerships and collaborations and deliver practical sustainable outcomes. The grants program will support organisations to be successful in engaging the City's community, through developing networks and relationships. Applications close Friday 29 June 2018.

Services 

ASeTTs new office location in Mirrabooka
ASeTTS provides a wide range of services for survivors of torture and trauma in WA. ASeTTS has re-established its operational presence in Mirrabooka and is co-located with the Metropolitan Migrant Resource Centre. A number of ASeTTS counselling staff, including child, youth, adult and family specialists will be working on a daily basis from the Mirrabooka office.

Multilingual Resource Kit 
Anti-Slavery Australia has created a Multilingual Resource Kit containing important information about forced labour and forced marriage for students, frontline workers and community members. The kit includes five key resources explaining risk factors and referral pathways for individuals facing or at risk of forced labour and forced marriage.

Youth Settlement Trends in Australia          

MYAN Australia has released their data report on youth settlement trends in Australia 2016-2017. This is a comprehensive report on youth settlement data across the humanitarian and broader migration programs. 

 

Key findings include:

  • Young people continued to make up an important percentage of arrivals under the Humanitarian Programme (23%), Family stream (21%) and Skill stream (8%) of the Migration Programme, comprising 15% of all arrivals under all migration categories
  • The majority (59%) of youth arrivals in all migration categories were in the 18-24 age group
  • Young people arriving under the Humanitarian Programme made up 32% of all youth arriving under all migration categories
