Notes  from  the  JSQ

As we return to Europe this week for concerts in Amsterdam and Copenhagen, we are glad to be able to continue relationships with audiences that have meant a great deal to the Juilliard String Quartet over the years and decades.   These opportunities are especially delightful when we reconnect with old friends, some of whom are true repositories of JSQ stories.   Looking forward to meeting us in Amsterdam on our present tour, one particularly devoted friend, who has followed the JSQ since 1973, joyfully recalls being “knighted” by Robert Mann at the Garden Hotel in Amsterdam, after which he was always welcome to attend the Quartet’s rehearsals.  Another story of his explains the origin of a charming name: “Das Blümchen Quartett.”  “After a concert in a small place (Coesfeld, Germany) with a very enthusiastic audience, every member of the JSQ got just one flower.  Even young people were so fascinated and wanted autographs that Robert exclaimed ‘this is no rock concert!’”

Well, rock concert or not, small town or large city, we are delighted to be back in Europe sharing great music with friends old and new!
