Homestead Pest Campaign Meeting & Protest

Meeting: Wednesday, January 6, 7 PM

Protest: Saturday, January 15, 1 PM

Join our online meeting here

KUT is part of a campaign to help Homestead tenants fight back against pest infestations, and we need bodies for a protest on Saturday January 15, at Homestead's main offices (80 Johnson Street) at 1 PM. The KUT supports these brave tenants in their fight for humane housing from Homestead! Find the link for our Jan. 6 protest planning meeting above.

Feed The People Program

When/Where: Ongoing

As part of our commitment to feeding the people of Kingston, we are making sandwiches and soup several times each week, for hungry community members. We need volunteers for both making sandwiches and cooking soup, so we can keep those bellies full!

Dear Landlord Screening

When/Where: Stay tuned!

We are organizing a digital screening of Dear Landlord, a 1970 documentary about the struggles of low-rent tenants for better housing in Kingston. Following the screening will be a discussion with Joan Kuyek, a former Kingston City Councillor, tenant organizer in Kingston, founder of MiningWatch Canada, author, and lifelong community activist, who is interviewed in the documentary.

KUT In the Community

On Christmas Day, more than a dozen KUT volunteers hosted a pancake breakfast for our friends and community members at the Integrated Care Hub. Some KUT allies with the Not Alone Team in Belleville also dropped off food and clothing donations to a local organization. We didn't let the icy weather get in the way of a great Christmas morning for all!

Do you have fundraising ideas? We want to hear them!

In an effort to raise more funds, to pay for all of the projects we want to do in 2022, the KUT is looking for fundraising ideas. Do you make something we could sell? Do you have event ideas? Is your workplace or union interested in supporting the tenant struggle? Email your ideas to katarokwitenants@gmail.com!

Call for Volunteers and Donations

Volunteers and donations are how we achieve everything you’ve read about here, and we’re always looking for more of both, to put more plans into action, and make Kingston’s tenants even stronger. We are looking for:

  • Monetary donations (through our GoFundMe)

  • Food (especially for sandwiches and soup)

  • Winter clothing

  • Volunteers!

In an effort to better utilize our volunteer resources, we’ve put together a brief survey to keep volunteer contact info and volunteer roles up to date. It only takes one minute to complete, and there is something for every level of time/effort commitment, so please fill it in today! You can fill out the survey here.
