Holokū Ball a tremendous success! In traditional families of Hawai`i, as beloved kūpuna transition from being the head of the household to one who requires care, they continue to be afforded great respect and affection within the family structure. This is why it’s always important for E Ala Hawaiian Cultural Center to respect and honor kūpuna. E Ala E did just that at our Nov. 4 Holokū Ball that was held at the Westin Crystal City Hotel in Arlington, VA, where we paid tribute to our kupuna. There were so many helping hands, acts of kindness, and generous donations that found us all in indescribable awe. We send our heartfelt mahalo to our sponsors, without whom we wouldn’t have been able to host our gala event: Papa Ola Lokahi, Nakupuna Foundation, APIA Scholars, Reggie Maddox, Pueo LLC, and the McKeague `Ohana. And because of nā lima hana (helping hands), we hosted an event that was fun, exciting, and full of aloha! So big mahalo to entertainers Kamaka Fernandez and Kaleo Solatorio, and Kūpono; the Hawai`i Clubs of American University, Georgetown University, George Washington University, and Mindy of GMU; E Ala E `Ohana and Friends (Farias, Stewart, Aunty Ku`ulei, Aunty Faith, Kelly Kikukawa-Walker, Haunani Soriano-Dean). And to those who donated to our auctions … wow and mahalo to Aloha Crew, Amy Alcain, Amy Moore, Francis Pimmel/Martin & MacArthur, Kevin’s Worldwide, Les and Laura Boring, Maui Jim Sunglasses, Ramon Camarillo, Wes Ishimoto and the Westin Crystal City! E Ala E committed to donating 100% of our auction proceeds to help a Title 1 school in Lahaina (or wherever the Dept. of Education deems best). And because of our donors’ kindness and our generously bidding audience, E Ala E will be donating about $5,500.00 to help Maui.
It’s so difficult to express E Ala E’s appreciation to everyone and the fun and excitement of our event. Instead, we share our heartfelt memories of aloha through Photos by Pono Farias. |

Moe I Ka Maluhia (Rest in Peace) The `Ohana at E Ala E Hawaiian Cultural Centers sends Lei of Aloha and Love to the `ohana of Aunty Julie Coleson and Aunty Kehau Butts. We could write books about each of them, but perhaps a couple of words at a time, which speak volumes to describing them and bring to heart many unforgettable memories: |
