NextGenerationEU a great opportunity for Europe and Italy
As population ages in Italy, people tend to become pessimistic with a nostalgic attitude to a past when “things were better”. Is there any space for optimism and enthusiasm for young generations that tend to abandon Italy in search of the American dream? The Next Generation EU plan is definitely a potential source to boost and unchain Italy’s energies. As the European Union rightly claims “NextGenerationEU is more than a recovery
plan – it is a once in a lifetime chance to emerge stronger from the pandemic, transform our economies and societies, and design a Europe that works for everyone”. Under slogans such as “Make It Green” and “Make It Digital” this plan is unleashing
US$ 1 trillion in favour of European members. The big net recipients from the fund – Italy, Poland, Spain, Romania and other Southern and Central European countries – will receive transfers of between 0.6 and 1.9 per cent of GDP per year to 2026. Italy has started to receive part of US$ 260 billion. This fund is released only upon implement structural reforms. In Italy these are long overdue. To put this amount into perspective, the famous Marshall plan deployed, in current dollars, US$ 200 billion for the western Europe. One of the challenges appears to be communication, In Italy it is called the "National Recovery and Resillience Plan", the majority will be implemented by local administrations and hence there is a disconnect between this huge opportunity and the population’s perception.
