As I’ve written in previous newsletters, I’ve been playing with polymer clay for the past few months. I love experimenting with it best of all. I’ve made lots of “Natasha beads,” for example, and, when I get them looking just so, I squish them into a new shape—or, if I’m really feeling adventurous, I run them through my pasta machine—to see what happens.

Once in a while, I end up with something even cooler, but, most of the time, I just end up with a mess. Either way, I love the process and figure I could either spend a few dollars on a bar of clay or a piece of pie (Baked Pie Company is just a couple of doors down from the studio!), and the former has a lot fewer calories.

What I don’t like as much is finishing my pieces, yet I feel the need to do so—AND to make something useful, even if it's just going to decorate my house. I have the same issue when I quilt. While some folks are perfectly fine making and, then, storing quilt tops, I feel the need to turn them into actual quilts and either hang them or give them away. Truthfully, I feel the same way about all of my art: I have a hard time creating stuff if I don't have a plan for it.

Even when I’m choosing workshops for Purple Crayon, I start with the end in mind: What are students going to walk away with, and will they find it useful? I assume that most people, like me, don't want more stuff cluttering their home.

To ease my mind, I guess I could simply redefine my artistic goals. Instead of striving to create something functional, entertainment or self-therapy could be my aim. Last weekend, I discussed my issue with another PC member, and she said that she, too, had struggled when she first started doing mixed media. As an engineer, she was used to having order, structure, and purpose define her work. Over time, and with a lot of practice, however, she accepted the idea that, when she finished a mixed media piece, "It was OK that it was just something."

I “get” this in my head, but my heart isn’t so sure. And, unfortunately, I’ve not come up with a solution beyond just working on it. If you have a similar struggle, I hope it’s comforting to know that you’re not alone!

If you’re looking for a calorie-free opportunity to entertain yourself, I hope you’ll consider taking one of our upcoming workshops. And, if you missed out on signing up for our Watercolor for Absolute Beginners or Wire Wrapped Ring workshops, today is your lucky day: a seat has opened in both of these classes!

I look forward to just playing with you!
