Getting Ready for a Galaxy Far, Far Away Dear Readers: When I arrived at Carnegie Plaza on the fourteenth of January, I determined to get the most out of the Disney College Program as possible. In order to make our shared living space as enjoyable and comfortable as possible, I industriously teamed up with my roommates to vacuum our apartment, clean our counters, wash our dishes, scrub down our shower, and make our beds. In order to prepare for a career within the theme park industry, I attended nearly every educational class, lecture, workshop, panel, and presentation that was offered, which regularly totaled over 16 credit hours a month. In addition to staying afterwards to talk with speakers and panelists, I reached out to managers, employees, and Imagineers from all over the Glendale and Anaheim campuses to learn about their roles and seek career advice from them. Acting upon their advice, I focused on "thinking like a leader" by showing up for work on time, "doing life together" with my fellow cast members, performing my role with an upbeat attitude, and continuously improving from workplace feedback. In short, I have worked to ensure a smooth transition after the program by living, learning, and earning in the most responsible, professional, and dependable way possible, without losing sight of what it means to work and play at "The Happiest Place on Earth." However, even "The Happiest Place on Earth" can have its downtime, and for this reason it certainly is a good thing that there is an even happier place than Disneyland: Heaven! With all of the disappointments and letdowns of everyday life, it is comforting and encouraging to know that there truly is a perfect place free of all those faults and imperfections. In fact, the latest sermon at Saddleback Church's Anaheim campus focused on this very topic. The message was entitled "God's Promises About Heaven," and guest pastor Tim Lucas quoted the following verse from John 14:3 (NIV): "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am." Isn't that a comforting thought? If you thought my summary of the month of May was long, just wait until you see how much information I have packed into this edition of my official newsletter! As they say in Galaxy's Edge, " 'Til the Spire!" -Kent |

Speaking of places that make me happier than Earth, now is a good time to remind you that I will soon be transferring to a new role as Retail Vendor in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge! After many months of waiting, I will finally be receiving four intense days of training over the next two weeks. Before starting work in mid-July, I will first be outfitted in a Batuu-style costume, receive a refresher course in Guest Courtesy, practice story-telling the history of Batuu, build my character's identity, learn how to operate sales terminals, memorize the land's layout, and familiarize myself with merchandise. |

"I can affect change by transforming the only thing that I ever had control over in the first place and that is myself." - Deepak Chopra - |
Of course, residents of the planet of Batuu aren't the only ones who will be given a backstory. Guests using the Disney Play App in Galaxy's Edge have the opportunity to run errands, complete tasks, and work jobs that determine their affiliation with the three primary groups of Batuuans locked in a power struggle: The First Order, The Resistance, and Scoundrels. I have already gotten a head start on this process by familiarizing myself with the app. I have earned well over 12,000 credits by successfully completing missions for the Resistance, and doing a few odd jobs on the side for myself. |

When Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge first opened on May 31, the entire Resort braced for a massive influx of guests. Instead, what followed was a dramatic decrease in park attendance. This unfortunate result seems to be the result of several interrelated factors. To begin with, many guests are postponing their vacation trips until the second, flagship attraction opens later this year. In addition, ticket prices have risen significantly, making Disney less affordable. Finally, 14 new acres of Galaxy's Edge provide a lot of room for guests to spread out into, causing Disneyland to feel less crowded. |
"See any detour as an opportunity to experience new things." - H. Jackson Brown, Jr. - |
Lower attendance rates aren't necessarily an undesirable thing, however. With fewer guests in the park, the overall experience is greatly improved. Less crowding means less claustrophobia, shorter attraction wait times, and better Guest Service. The tiny, cramped stalls of the Black Spire Marketplace especially benefit from the more scattered groups of visiting Guests. |
Unlike other areas of the park, many guests in Galaxy's Edge spend most of their time simply staring at the strange world around them. The sheer brilliancy of the design aesthetics shines through in the most unexpected places, such as the restrooms (called "Refreshers"). The water faucets and blow-dryers are both positioned over a large trough, so no water drips onto the ground. |
Galaxy's Edge is supposed to be Disney's most immersive land ever, and it almost manages to pull off such a monumental feat. However, even though the Cast Members who work in Galaxy's Edge have fantastic costumes, park guests are subject to a multitude of clothing restrictions. They are not permitted to dress in robes, costumes, or clothing resembling cast member garb! Although there is a good reason for this policy, many guests have become frustrated at their inability to "join the adventure" and become part of their own Star Wars story. I strongly hope that these policies are loosened to allow park guests to completely immerse themselves in this new land. |

In my May newsletter, I described a few guest t-shirts that I had found rather humorous. Well, the creativity never seems to end, as I have yet another funny t-shirt design for you this month! Apparently, unicorns seem to be a common theme, because the one pictured at right is not the only one that caught my attention. Another funny t-shirt says, "Save our Planet; It's the Only One With Unicorns." It is truly unfortunate that Disney sells neither these unicorn shirts nor the ever-popular but hard-to-find "Pizza Planet" t-shirts. |

"Appreciation is a wonderful thing: it makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well." - Voltaire - |

You may not be able to find the perfect t-shirt at Disneyland, but you can certainly find Toy Story 4 merchandise everywhere! I noticed this unexpectedly adorable (and edible) decoration in the Main Street Candy Palace window when I was walking by. When you empower Cast Members to make magical moments for Guests, amazing things happen like this all of the time. |

With Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge overshadowing nearly everything else, it can be easy to overlook the other new experiences and attractions at the Disneyland Resort. On Pixar Pier at Disney's California Adventure Park, the Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind is now open. Although the ride lacks thrills and is a bit short, the overall theming is uniformly excellent! |
Although the Emotional Whirlwind attraction is a perfectly fine addition to Pixar Pier, two very different additions were recently introduced with great fanfare and much excitement. To begin with, the much-loved "Soarin' Over California" flight simulator has returned for the entire summer! It temporarily replaces the current film, which is called "Soarin' Around the World." Also, the brand-new 5,000-space Pixar Pals parking structure has been opened as well, as pictured below: |

Just today, I had the incredible honor of touring Walt Disney's private apartment, which is perched on top of the Main Street Fire Department building. The best thing I learned is that a fire pole used to run from the second floor down to the first floor, until one day when a bold guest climbed UP the pole and interrupted Walt's nap. Today, you can still see where the fire pole was cut off. |
It was surprisingly appropriate that I was able to visit Walt's Disneyland apartment just days after the entire resort celebrated the 60th Anniversary of the following three major attractions: the Matterhorn Bobsleds, the Disneyland Monorail, and the Submarine Voyage. Each of these attractions opened together on June 14, 1959 with then-vice president Nixon's family present. |

Even though the Star Wars franchise has a massive following and widespread popularity, it's not for everyone. That's why many guests and cast members alike are patiently waiting for the next big thing to hit the Disneyland Resort: an entire Marvel-themed land. Sometime next year, a SpiderMan attraction is set to open on the former site of Bugs Land, followed by a much larger and as-yet undisclosed superhero attraction. Coming off the success of its Avengers franchise, Disney's California Adventure Park expansion may also feature robotic stunt artists (dubbed "Stuntronics") flipping and flying through the air overhead. |

Ever since director Dallas Jenkins had the idea to create a TV series based upon the life of Christ, his project "The Chosen" has had a habit of breaking records. Not only is it the first series of its kind anywhere, but it also raised an unprecedented amount of money in its first investment round. With four episodes complete and another four on the way, The Chosen is exactly the kind of TV series you can feel good about binge-watching! Visit thechosen.tv to learn more! |

At the Disneyland Resort, the most important priority is Safety. This may sound like a straightforward goal, but the safest course of action is rarely the easiest or the most obvious. For example, black widow spiders often hide inside cabinets at the outdoor vending location near Autopia. To stay safe, I must use a flashlight before reaching inside to get something. Even though I often faint during vaccinations, I bravely got my Measels/Mumps/Rubella shot in order to keep guests safe from disease. |

Even though I often know things long before they happen at Disneyland, there were several pleasant surprises that happened this month. First, the backstage shuttle for cast members transitioned to a new continuous route, which greatly simplified transportation. In addition, I received my very first formal Guest Compliment, in a beautiful black folder! |
A much nastier surprise affected half of our apartment building this month. For four days, we did not have any hot water. This meant we couldn't wash the dishes, run the laundry, or take showers. I resorted to showering in the changing rooms at the Disneyland Resort! Then, when the maintenance crew fixed the thermostat on the hot water heater, they turned it up too high, resulting in scalding-hot water! I still haven't decided whether I prefer hypothermia or third-degree burns! A far better surprise was a trip into the Walt Disney Studios Archives in Burbank. Not only did I get to tour the famous campus, but I also held a genuine Oscar! |

When I haven't been working at the Resort or catching up on sleep this month, I've been volunteering my time with a variety of different ministries. As a member of Disney VoluntEARS, I helped with a massive diaper drive that was held at Angel Stadium in Anaheim. For an entire morning, I directed traffic and unloaded boxes of diapers from trucks bringing in the donations. Then, an opportunity arose at Saddleback Anaheim. The director of the church's Small Groups ministry was interested in starting a monthly email newsletter (of which I have some knowledge and experience). We collaborated on a project that just launched very successfully. Also at church, I joined the facilities team. Each Saturday night after the final service, I help drain the baptismal, put away traffic cones, gather signs, and fold up umbrellas. All three of these service opportunities have been very rewarding, and I am excited to see what the Lord has next for me! |

Just like this bird's-eye view of the Resort, I have been following developments back in Eugene from a distance. Of note: Hayward Field is well under construction for 2021 completion, and the City of Eugene is growing its own Hall's Aster seeds, because the current price is $1000/pound! |
