Neighbourhood and Community Centres around Queensland have been recognising National Reconciliation Week this week. The QFCA's newly developed narrative recognises the need for Neighbourhood and Community Centres to work collectively with our "First Peoples who have always known the significance of country, place and tribe". We believe that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can teach us a lot about Place Based methodology and practice in our centres and encourage the sharing of this knowledge in the spirit of reconciliation. | | |

| | Neighbourhood Centres around the nation celebrated National Volunteer Week. ANHCA has identified that 21600 volunteers work in Neighbourhood Centres around the country. Around 3500 are active in Queensland Centres each week. | | |

| | Riverview Community Centre has had to close their doors due to leasing issues with their current property. Other property options are being considered. Around half of the Neighbourhood Centre buildings in the state are owned by the Queensland Government, the other half from other property owners such as local councils or private rentals. This highlights infrastructure disparity issues for the sector with some Neighbourhood Centres being impacted more than others. | | |

| | QFCA members can apply for a new grants program from ANHCA. We've partnered with Sidney Myer Fund to deliver 'Supporting Stronger Communities', for metro-based houses tackling poverty and disadvantage.For rural/regional houses, grants are being delivered by FRRR through their 'Strengthening Rural Communities' program. | | |

| | Blackall-Tambo Neighbourhood Centre has been involved in the "Beauty in the Drought" project. This stunning Outback Wedding Dress was designed by QFCA Representative and Neighbourhood Centre Coordinator Virginia Wacker. It was made from cattle feed bags during the drought. | | Last week the Tasmanian State Government committed to providing extra recurrent core funding to Neighbourhood Houses Tasmania Inc. The peak body has 5 staff members who tirelessly work across 35 Neighbourhood Centres in the state. By comparison, the QFCA has 2 staff members working across more than 124 Neighbourhood Centres in Queensland (one full time, one 10 hours part time) . The QFCA's current contract with the Queensland Government expires on the 30th June 2019 and we are currently awaiting word on refunding and a proposal to expand our work across across the state. | | |

| | The ANHCA (Australian Neighbourhood Houses and Community Centres Association) committee is coming to Caloundra Community Centre on the 6th and 7th of June for a two day strategic planning meeting with the QFCA. ANHCA's committee is comprised of the Executive officer and President of each State's peak body. On Thursday 6th June at 6pm, an informal pizza and drinks party will be held at the centre. The QFCA would like to invite sector members who would like to attend to meet the representatives and Centre Managers from all over Australia.
