Lutheran Church of Our Savior Margaret in Her Own Words... |
Hello everyone! I am thrilled to be here, and to be so welcomed already into this church community. Pastor Stefan wrote up an introduction for me last week, but we thought you would probably want to get to know a little bit more about me, in my own words this time. I’m joining the staff of Lutheran Church of Our Savior as the new Director of Children and Youth Ministries. As I understand it, my duties focus on any aspect of the church which includes the children and youth of the parish, from getting the youth group restarted to coordinating and supporting existing volunteer programs with youth ministries I will also be finding new ways to connect our youth to inter-generational programs throughout the church. My central duty is to be listening and advocating for the children and families within the church, and to make sure their gifts and ministries are encouraged. As a cradle Episcopalian, I have a lifetime of knowledge and love of the liturgical church that I can bring to my work, though I may need some refreshers on specific Lutheran practices or theology. To give you some background on my education and work history: I graduated from University of Evansville in 2008 with an Interdisciplinary degree focusing on Biology and Religion. Since then, I have worked at a number of non-profit internships. I served as an AmeriCorps tutor in alternative high schools in rural portions of Ohio, taught multiple grade levels in the Philippines through an Episcopal missionary service: Young Adult Service Corps, and served with Maryland Episcopal Service Corps in Baltimore working with House of Ruth Maryland, a domestic violence agency. Most recently, I worked as a youth and young adult ministries director for an Episcopal church in Maryland and served there for the past three years. When not working, I self-identify as a geek, a storyteller, a dancer, and a crafter. I can tell you more than you ever wanted to know about the various houses of Hogwarts or which is the best Star Trek captain. I can also dance the Karabushka, a medieval Russian folk dance, to the tune of Wipeout, which has been more useful than you might think on various occasions. I learned to knit and sew as a young child, though thankfully my skills have improved quite a bit from those early projects. My most recent crafting adventure has been teaching myself surface embroidery, and I tends to keep a project nearby just to keep my hands busy while I think things through. I grew up here in Dayton, and I’m glad to be back in my own hometown after several years of bouncing around different countries and states. My family is possibly even more thrilled at the fact than I am. My cat, not quite so much, though he may have finally forgiven me for the move from Maryland to Ohio. In the short term, I plan to do a lot of reaching out to learn more of what has been going on in your church, and what the priorities and goals are moving forward. Several people have already made sure to introduce themselves to me since I’ve started, and hopefully I will start putting names to faces soon-- reminders are appreciated as we go. I look forward to meeting everyone! Join us for the installation of Margaret Clinch as our new Director of Children and Youth Ministry - THIS SUNDAY during the 10 am worship service. |

Save Augusta Victoria Hospital in Jerusalem! (and cancer and dialysis patients) From Pastor Stefan: In my sermon last week, I promised to pick up my cross, take a risk, and follow Jesus. Despite being sick to my stomach with nervousness, I called my President, Senators, and Congressman yesterday. And you can, too! The 2017 federal budget designated $25 million for 6 hospitals in East Jerusalem, which the White House has announced will now not be released after all -- as a bargaining chip for negotiations. Augusta Victoria Hospital in Jerusalem is owned and run by us - the Lutheran World Federation. And it is in grave danger of closing. AVH is the only place where 5 million Palestinians can receive chemotherapy, radiation, and kidney dialysis treatment. So here’s what you can do:(several of you asked to hear about my experience before they themselves call). |

Blessing of the Quilts--Coming Soon! |
As one of the missions of the LCOS, we support Lutheran World Relief. Lutheran World Relief is dedicated to international development and relief services in areas of disaster. On Sunday, September 30th, the mission quilts and baby layettes made by the WELCA Sewing Group will be displayed in the sanctuary. The Lutheran World Relief website states “recipients use the Quilts to shield against the cold and rain, and warm bedding. But their versatility also makes Quilts useful as simple tents, floor coverings, or a wrap to hold a baby on a mother's back.”During the service, Pastor Stefan will bless the quilts and layettes that these items will give warmth and comfort to the those in need around the world. The quilts and layettes will then be packed and shipped in early October to Lutheran World Relief to be distributed in needed areas. Please join us on September 30 to give your blessings to these items of hope for those in need. |

Member Spotlight Connecting with Each Other Karen Tyson How long have you been a member at LCOS? I’ve been a member for 50+ years! |
How are you involved at LCOS? Well, I started out way back by teaching Sunday school. My husband was the superintendent of Sunday School. It just grew from one thing to another. I’m involved in the Sewing Circle. I didn’t start in that until after I retired. I’ve been involved for about 15 years--I’ve been very busy! Technology has improved since I joined the Sewing Group. I can remember when we cut out fabric with a pattern and scissors. There were no rotary cutters or cutting boards. It’s a lot of fun--telling stories on each other. What do you do when you’re not at church? I go to my grandchildren’s soccer games. Visit with my grandchildren. If you were a new addition to a crayon box, what would you be and why? Yellow--because it’s bright and sunny. Favorites: Hobby: Sewing Game: Solitaire Movie: White Christmas Fill in the Blank, but you can’t say “home”. “There’s no place like _______”. Church. Because that’s about the only place I’m going anymore!!!“ |
