Establishing and Maintaining Healthy Routines

Let’s talk about the benefits of routine. We are all creatures of habit, and I don’t know about you, but I love my routines. When we are children, routines give us a sense of safety, but as we mature, routines also give us a sense of purpose. Let’s face it, we feel good when we follow through on our routines. How many times have you said to yourself, “Well I did my workout today and got the laundry done?”  Research also shows that healthy routines help us to regulate our emotions because they shut down our fight or flight (aka fear/stress) mechanism and reduce anxiety.

 

Teens and young adults often have a difficult time establishing and maintaining healthy routines. We can blame that pre-frontal cortex again, the part of the brain that is responsible for rational thinking and problem solving. It is still developing during our teen and young adult years. As a result, teens and young adults have trouble with organization, keeping track of time, and paying attention.

 

Unfortunately, a lack of routine and structure can lead to procrastination, anxiety, and stress. Sleeping and eating habits can also be affected. All of these can lead to more negative self-talk.

Monthly Teen Tool- Define My Day!

 

Planners are a great way for teens and young adults to manage their time, keep track of assignments, and avoid procrastination. Many schools provide them to students. If you prefer, "Google" teen planners and you will certainly find one that is perfect for you. You can also use a digital planner or another organizational app on your phone.

 

So the question is why, with all these options, do teens and young adults seem to stop using them? Here are some reasons that teens have shared with me:

 

1. Hard copy planners usually have pages I don't need and not enough of the pages that I do need.
2. If they are digital, they are too confusing.
3. I never remember to use it.

 

Some of the teens, and many of the young adults I work with prefer my one page "Define My Day" tool. It is a one- page tool that combines prioritizing tasks with a few short positive mindset prompts. It can also be updated as your day goes on. This tool might be right for you!
