Newsletter August 12, 2024 Together, we're #keepingitsacred...

Yesterday, I gathered with dozens of other community leaders and hundreds of community members to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the shooting at the North Valley Jewish Community Center.

The August 10, 1999 incident, where a white supremacist gunman entered the JCC, fired over 70 rounds from a uzi, shot 5 people (three of them under 10 years old), and then killed a nearby postal carrier, Joseph Ileto, was motivated by hate of Jews, Asians, and Latinos. (View a news story on this HERE; and you may find my benediction at the link HERE.)

The keynote speaker for the event was a dad named Fred Guttenberg whose 14 year old daughter, Jaime, was killed at the Parkland High School shooting. He spoke about the impact on his family including his son who was at the school at the time, and the dangers of gun violence. (photo above)

Clearly these massacres occurred at the nexus of hatred and the unchecked gun lobby. The violence is escalating with 400M guns (plus more ghost guns) in the US and 20M of them are assault weapons. It is all so sad.

And it is fitting for us to feel our sadness as tonight marks the saddest day of the Jewish calendar year. On this holiday, known as Tisha b’Av, we commemorate all kinds of hateful acts targeting the Jewish people. Everything from the destruction of the First and Second Temples, the Spanish Inquisition, the Russian programs, the Holocaust, antisemitism in the Middle East and beyond. We mourn it all. And accordingly, it is customary to read the book of Lamentations to aid in our spiritual expression.

On the one hand, it is comforting to know that we don’t have to hold this kind of pain year round, and instead can reserve one sad day a year to mourning in this way. On the other hand, we are commanded to feel this kind of pain and observe morning as an entire united community once a year. And that can be painful to bring up old wounds.

This year we observe this holy day with a fresh set of wounds and deeper sense of mourning having recently experienced the October 7 attacks. (For a new set of Lamentations on this theme, please see this touching poetry HERE.)

All of this mourning is meant for us to be reminded that the free practice of our religious tradition and free expression of our cultural heritage is not to be taken for granted. Likewise, it may serve to encourage our fight for the right of others to freely practice the traditions that they hold, dear.

Otherwise, why are we remembering the tragedies that have befallen our people? These are days to reflect and consider what we can do to make the world a better place for ourselves and others.

So tonight, take some time to reflect upon the feelings of vulnerability we may feel, and consider new ways to stem the tide of antisemitism, bigotry in all its forms, gun, violence, and more. Let's turn our morning into mitzvot.

Together, may we build a world of safety for all.

This is how we’re keeping it sacred.

Together we are keeping it sacred….

Rabbi Heather Miller

Founder, Keeping It Sacred

KITS AROUND THE WORLD!

One of our amazing KITS Community European members, Nassim, has got the Olympic spirit! Here she is at the site of the 2024 Paris Beach Volleyball tournaments. The Olympics, like our Keeping It Sacred community, promotes global communal connections and celebrations. Next time in Los Angeles!

LOVING CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILY OF JUDY WENDORF Z"L

The entire Keeping It Sacred community expresses deep condolences to the family of Judy Wendorf who passed and was laid to rest last week in a ceremony officiated in Los Angeles by Rabbi Miller. Judy loved tennis, all the delicacies Bea’s Bakery, and preparing giant piles of presents her kids and grandkids on Hanukkah. She delighted in elaborate yearly comedy and musical performances she would organize and birthday trips to Vegas with her friends. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 54 years, her son, and grandson, and leaves behind her devoted daughters, their husbands, grandkids and their partners, and two great-grandchildren. May they all be comforted among all mourners everywhere.

REFLECTIONS AND EXPECTATIONS: HIGH HOLY DAYS WITH KITS

Join us for the High Holy Days!

Our Founder, Rabbi Heather Miller will bring texts, traditions, and teachings from the wisdom of the Sages into relevance today. And this year, she will again be joined by the talented and good-hearted Cantorial Soloist Rachel Rothman. Rachel holds her Master’s degree in Vocal Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and fuels her spirituality and Judaism through music.

The entire lineup of services will be offered online including a Rosh Hashanah Seder, and a Morning Rosh Hashanah Service, as well as a hybrid (in person and online) Tashlich Service, Kol Nidrei Service, a Yom Kippur morning service, Yizkor, and Neilah service (See below to sign up). As always, services will be free of charge to all who wish to attend, but your contributions allow us to uphold this value of keruv/accessibility. As you reserve, please consider a meaningful gift to help us cover the costs of running this transformational programming and helping to support all of the sacred work we do.

MORE about Cantorial Soloist Rachel Rothman:

We are so blessed as a community to have the exquisite heartfelt musicality of Cantorial Soloist Rachel Rothman co-lead us this High Holy Day Season. She holds her Master’s degree in Vocal Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She has spent summers performing with opera festivals in Italy, and currently has an in-demand vocal studio where she teaches voice lessons privately. And, Rachel feels lucky to fuel her spirituality and Judaism through music. Rabbi Miller has known Rachel since 2008 and shares, “Rachel is an incredible talent, with a soul of sincerity, sensitivity, and sensibility. She is a gifted prayer leader with a range from participatory song to high art, having a voice trained by camp song leaders and conservatory instructors alike. I am incredibly excited to again co-lead this season's worship experiences with Rachel.”

HEALING CIRCLE & TALMUD TEXT STUDY EVERY THURSDAY

JOIN our healing circle holding space for all looking for prayers for healing. This and EVERY THURSDAY -- at 10:30am PT/1:30pm ET.

Immediately following that: at 11am PT/2pm ET, join us as we jump into a conversation with the rabbinic sages of old. We enjoy studying a page of Talmud every day and reviewing together every Thursday, adding our perspectives and the relevance to our own lives as we go along. We enjoy participation from participants across the world who span the spectrum of race, gender, class, age, and connection to Jewish thought.

The rabbis could never have imagined such a wonderful group considering their thoughts!

What people say:

"Yesterday's class was superb!! I remain impressed by so many things that you do! You are able to keep us on track, share (some of) your knowledge with us, make all sorts of connections to the Jewish and secular worlds, and meet each of us where we are! Kudos to you!!"

"Talmud study has opened a window to that world for me. I love the anthropology and sociology of it all."

"The minority opinions may someday count as much as the majority opinions. It reminds us that things change the Halacha changes and we change each year that we read it."

"We have the opportunity to compare the Halacha we are practicing today with the one they were writing and studying in the Talmud... It has been very interesting how things have evolved how we keep the tradition in our own way."

"I feel very close to this amazing group and I'm grateful to Rabbi Miller for conducting it."

To join, please register HERE. Also, DM Rabbi Miller on Facebook HERE to be added to the closed, secret group where we question and discuss. And look for us on Instagram daily HERE.
