In May, we egged Kids on the Go! This outstanding organization helps kids with special needs with physical, occupational, speech and recreational therapies. These therapeutic and wellness programs help them develop skills which will provide opportunities for growth. We egged them with supplies for their younger kids to strengthen motor skills and inspire art! I had the privilege of touring their facility – great work being done there! WHERE ARE THE EGGS THIS MONTH? (Book 2, Chapter 10) June - Norway The Eggs landed in Oslo, where they were met by Svana, their host. She quickly got the group settled in their hotel and treated them to a wonderful seafood buffet. The first thing Svana planned was a hike through the beautiful Norwegian countryside. Later, the Eggs explored a Viking museum. They ended their time in Norway by enjoying a breathtaking midnight sun cruise through the fjords. They snapped plenty of photos to capture the amazing beauty! |

Carla Tinsley-Smith was named Director of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA) for the Detroit Institute of Arts in 2021. She leads the operation and management of IDEA strategies throughout the museum. She also serves on several regional boards and advisory councils. Ms. Tinsley-Smith embraces her position with passion as she leads the DIA in its continuing mission and growth in this area. She is also a native Detroiter and an art enthusiast! |

or abilities, have equal opportunities to engage with and benefit from the resources, programs, and experiences offered by the museum. The work expands throughout the museum, touching on the physical, programming, and technological aspects of the museum. This includes: Ensuring our digital resources are accessible to all, including those who use assistive technologies. Offering programs and resources that are available to everyone, regardless of background. Making the museum accessible to people with differing abilities.
Ultimately, the goal of prioritizing Access within our IDEA journey is to break down barriers and create a more inclusive and equitable museum experience for everyone. This is work that we’re excited to continue in the coming years. |

Through listening, research, and best practices, it's expected that community members, team members and supporters of the DIA feel like they truly belong in this space. As Salvador Salort-Pons, DIA Director, President, and CEO shared within a few months of my joining the museum “the IDEA journey will help us become a better museum for our team, visitors, volunteers, donors, and the communities we serve.” I wholeheartedly believe this statement and I look forward to progress not only for today’s visitors, but also for generations to come. |

In 2022 we began a monthly series with DIA team members titled IDEA in Focus: ART Talk. The series includes an in-depth discussion, where works are presented, and attendees respond to thought-provoking questions before hearing from a curatorial staff member who offers insight into the artists and historical context of the piece. What I believe is most significant about this experience is it underscores the mission of the museum – to help each visitor (or team member in this case) find personal meaning in art – individually and with each other. Our curators are continuously expanding the narratives represented in our collections, ensuring that diverse voices and experiences are reflected on our walls. Our interpreters play a crucial role in making these artworks accessible to a wide range of audiences, ensuring that everyone can engage with and appreciate the stories they tell, and that’s just to name a few. Our current and upcoming exhibition schedule is a testament to the many narratives that tie directly into the IDEA work, from Regeneration: Black Cinema 1898 – 1971, Tiff Massey: 7 Mile + Livernois to Japanese Friendship Dolls and The Art of Dining: Food Culture in the Islamic World, we are operating in way that creates space for everyone to feel valued, respected, and represented.
