Get Free Showy Milkweed Rootstock Saturday

Windsor Garden Club will have asclepias speciosa "Showy Milkweed" ('Davis' variety) rhizome cuttings available this Saturday, Nov. 11, in the Town Green Community Garden. Planted straight into the ground during fall, the rhizomes can grow to a mature plant with flowers in the first year. The milkweed is a key feeding plant for Monarch Butterflies and their caterpillars!

Available between 9 a.m. and noon at the Town Green Community Garden. (See below.) Rhizomes/rootstock are free to all, but WGC will appreciates any donations. The Community Garden is located at the corner of Windsor Road and Joe Rodota Way in the Town Hall complex.

WGC leader Cindy Fenton grows showy milkweed and other types of milkweed as part of a cooperative project with the club and the Healdsburg Pollinators to turn our towns into havens for Monarch Butterflies. The monarchs need the milkweed to feed and reproduce. Visit the WGC Website for information on how you can use your garden to support Monarchs and other butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. They're the pollinators who power our plants!

Community Garden Work Party is This Saturday

Community Gardeners: This Saturday, Nov. 11, is November's Second Saturday work morning. Hours are from 9 a.m. to noon. Garden leaders want to remind you that the end of the year and the summer growing season are approaching. This is the time a to complete (if you haven’t already) your six (6) hours of annual required volunteer time in the garden. Bring a hat, garden gloves, some water and help spruce up the common areas of the garden. Check in with work party leaders when you arrive to see what maintenance tasks need doing, and be sure to record your hours in the notebook in the kiosk.

Plant in November for Spring Flower Bloom

Hollyhocks, lupine, California poppy, Borage, Blue Flax, Rannunculas, Zinnias, Sweet Peas, Pansies, Peonies, and bulbs. Any kind of flower bulbs. November is the prime time for planting them all in Northern California! November is the last "good" month to plant from seed straight to ground in Windsor's climate zone. All of them do better with a bit of winter chill and winter rains after planting.

The Press Democrat has a wonderful story on what to plant now in Sonoma County for 2024. For seeds and bulbs, check out Prickett's Nursery between Windsor and Healdsburg. Prickett's is a supporter of Windsor Garden Club. Are you a WGC member? Don't forget your WGC Membership card while shopping there - members get a 10 percent discount!
