Pāpā Forest in recovery

Through our long-term intention and process of helping the forest thrive, we experience ourselves healing too.

Men of PA’A, a recovery group centered around community service and 'āina (land) stewardship, joined us in January at our Pāpā Forest in South Kona. They helped make more space for accessible walking trails, and endemic and indigenous species. Some stars of our outplanting included alahe'e, a small tree currently found in our forest with fragrant white blossoms, and hala pepe, a beautiful, endemic, Dr. Suess-esque Dracaena. Plus, we planted 24 māmaki plants.

This workday was made possible, in part, by a portion of proceeds from our Māmaki Collaborative. These contributions helped us purchase soil and essential tools for the work. Mahalo (thank you) for supporting this effort!

Nature & Art as Therapy

Momentum continues to build with Nature & Art as Therapy, our free-of-charge program that uses nature, the arts, and community to support mental health wellness, awareness, and destigmatization. This month, we repurposed donated books to craft Eco-Journals – unique vessels for words, art, memories, and more. Participants shared about personal journaling histories and helped each other through the process of crafting.

Next session planned for May 2022.

An oasis and a home for those unhoused

Garden installation at 808 Homeless Task Force’s Weller House - Therapeutic & Transitional Housing is underway! We’ve chosen a location directly next to the house to encourage resident use of the garden. Despite the extensive efforts needed to manage and remove pre-existing thorny, fast-growing, and sprawling non-native ornamentals, we love this spot for its rich soil, rock walls, and potential for meandering walking trails throughout the property grounds. Resident move-in is set for the near future…we’ll keep you posted.

This garden will not only evoke a sense of tranquility and home, but ongoing therapeutic horticulture sessions in the garden will offer an opportunity for employable skill development, introduction to leisure activities, and intra- and inter-personal growth.
