This Month's Focus: Seeing with a Decided Heart

What does it mean to see with a decided heart? To answer that, we must first answer this question – what does it mean to be seen – truly seen?

We live in a society that is caught up with titles, awards and status. But when our focus is on these things, we often miss the very essence of who we are. Being seen and truly seeing is about going past the extrinsic value of things and looking for who people are – their character, their uniqueness. It is appreciating someone for the energy they bring, not what they do.

We have seen the havoc focusing on the external factors can have on kids and adults alike. There is a mental health crisis that has touched every demographic in the United States. Mental health issues such as suicide rates, eating disorders, anxiety disorders, at risk behaviors – all on the rise. The irony is that we have never been more connected – at least digitally.

Unfortunately, what we are seeing is being highly curated with filters, sensationalism and extremes, but what we are not seeing is the true hearts, character and spirit of one another.

It can feel overwhelming to challenge the constant societal reinforcement of A plus plusses, perfect hair, soccer trophies and posed selfies, but there is hope, and it is such an easy switch. Let’s stop seeing what people are doing, and instead focus on who they are. SEEING EACH OTHER AT HOME:

How often do we get thanked for the million and one things we do for our children?

“Thanks for dinner.”

“Thanks for the ride to school.”

“Thanks for folding my clothes.”

If we are lucky, we hear this, but teens are still developing their empathy, so honestly, sometimes a grunt or eyeroll is all we get. One thing we can do to help our teens is to start modeling what gratitude truly sounds like.

“Thank you for doing the dishes. I appreciate your helpfulness.”

“Wow. I see how focused you are on your studies. I appreciate your determination.”

“Gosh, the way you picked that up for your brother was so kind.”

In a powerful way, not only are we modeling gratitude, we are also appreciating our kids for who they are not what they are doing. The words in bold are called virtue words, and we will be teaching about them in our masterclass this month. They are truly the foundation for all our work. These words are the language that helps us see and be seen. In fact, after practicing this at home for a while, cofounder, Sonja’s daughter, paused as Sonja was making dinner and said, “Thanks for making dinner, Mom. I know it takes time after a long day of work. I really appreciate your kindness in serving us dinner.”

That’s the beauty. When we practice truly seeing others, they will also start to truly see us.

SEEING EACH OTHER AT WORK:

When we go into companies and start teaching about virtues, there is often immediate resistance. The words feel too soft. Going to work is about collecting a paycheck, not about bonding, right?

Wrong.

In this age of The Great Resignation (or The Great Talent Migration), what we are hearing from clients who have left work is:

“I don’t matter there.”

“I am not making an impact.”

“I don’t fit in.”

What is really being said here? Employees don’t feel seen and valued, so they don’t feel a sense of belonging.

A quick way to start to shift a culture at work is to start acknowledging colleagues for who they are instead of what they are doing.

“Thank you for organizing that report in a way that is easy to understand and take action. Helping us understand the problem and solution is one of your superpowers.”

“Thank you. It took a lot of courage to come to me with that question.”

“Your determination to work through this glitch and find a new solution is really motivating.”

The above examples acknowledge that the individual is necessary and appreciated in all their uniqueness for the company. They are not just a body filling a seat and a duty. We have watched whole companies go from places where people dreaded going to work to places where people go to enjoy a sense of belonging and fun. Wouldn’t you want to stay at a place like that?
