This week, the CDC approved vaccinations for children ages 5-12 in the US. Parents dutifully made appointments for their children to get jabbed. All in the name of the health and safety for our families and the vulnerable around us. And, as we scheduled our appointment for our eldest child, we noticed that he will be due to get his second shot on the first night of Hanukkah— a Hanukkah miracle for sure!

Hanukkah traditionally celebrates two miracles: 1) the miracle of the victory of a small band of Maccabees prevailing over the might of the Assyrian army. And, 2) the miracle of the one small kosher cruse of oil found lasting for eight nights (the length of time necessary to properly rededicate a Temple for sacred purposes). But miracles do not have to be this big. They don’t have to be as groundbreaking as the splitting of the sea, or the disappearance of the wine in Elijahs’ cup at Passover, either.

In the Jewish tradition, we read a set of daily prayers known as the Nissim B’Chol Yom- the blessings of everyday miracles. Everyday miracles? This sounds like an oxymoron. But as is typical, Jewish tradition is once again trying to sensitize us to the blessings all around us all the time, not just once in a generation fantastical events.

The Nissim B’Chol Yom follows a typical morning routine as it begins with expressing gratitude for the ability to distinguish between day and night. This means that everyday, we are driven to give gratitude for consciousness itself. This blessing followed by a blessing thanking God for the ability to open our eyes. Another truly astounding gift. And with each successive prayer, we thank God for the ability to sit up and stand and move. Each piece of our waking up in the morning not to be taken for granted. Each piece a miracle in its own right. What a way to start the day! And, this encourages us to never forget that simply to be alive is a miracle.

In the midst of my contemplating miracles, Friday, I found myself on the back of a golf cart being toted around a wedding site in La Quinta, CA. It just so happened to be on a property where the movie about noticing miracles, known as Miracle on 34th Street, was written. So, what are the miracles do you see on your street? In your life? In the world around you? To be sensitized to these is to feel the blessing of being alive.

Let’s join together December 5th to celebrate the miracles around us during the 8th night of Hanukkah. Please register for this global celebration HERE.

Together, we’re celebrating miracles! Together, we’re #keepingitsacred…

She was very involved in our programs and in the midst of immersing herself in the study of Judaism and practices. We uplift her loving memory by naming this program in honor of her love of exploring Jewish life through the KITS community programming.

The more varied the participants the deeper the conversations. Thursdays 11am PT/2pm ET.

We are:

People interested in becoming Jewish

Members of various Jewish denominations

Clergy

People who are not Jewish

We are in our 20s to 80s, and we are everywhere on the spectrum of gender.

Build community affirming of one another’s journey in the sea of Talmud with us! Benefit from the wisdom of Jewish tradition!

What people say:

"Yesterday's class was superb!! I remain impressed by so many things that you do! You are able to keep us on track, share (some of) your knowledge with us, make all sorts of connections to the Jewish and secular worlds, and meet each of us where we are! Kudos to you!!"

"Talmud study has opened a window to that world for me. I love the anthropology and sociology of it all."

"The minority opinions may someday count as much as the majority opinions. It reminds us that things change the Halacha changes and we change each year that we read it."

"We have the opportunity to compare the Halacha we are practicing today with the one they were writing and studying in the Talmud... It has been very interesting how things have evolved how we keep the tradition in our own way."

"I feel very close to this amazing group and I'm grateful to Rabbi Miller for conducting it."

AND just prior to our Talmud Study, we hold space for check-ins and healing prayers for loved ones in need, including ourselves.

Together may we bring dignity to those who have died on the streets.

SAVE THE DATES: BALANCING YOUR INNER LIFE

Jewish tradition houses some of the most beautiful teachings on character qualities. A thousand years ago, Rabbi Bachya Ibn Pakuda decided to these sacred texts together, organized into various character qualities that he felt would inspire people to live lives of meaning. He called his work “Duties of the Heart,” and it is the work upon which the Mussar Movement (of Exceptional Character Qualities) is based. The book is available for free on Sefaria.org, and so we will take time each week to study teachings and explore how we might make sense of them in our lives today.

Join us for one class, several, or all 9 weeks worth of classes! Please invite your friends to take the series with you, too!
