Yom Kippur is a time of searching out the inner chambers of our hearts. The places that are wounded, the places that are grateful. The places that yearn for peace and comfort. The work of the High Holy Day season is that of unlocking these chambers, and working toward healing and greater wholeness so that we might ensure a good and sweet new year ahead.

Turning inward is actually a turning upwards into the realm of the spiritual. There, The Zohar (Tikkunei Zohar 26b:4), teaches:

There is a palace of tears,

to which no one can gain entrance

except through crying,

and there is a palace of song

to which no one can gain entrance

except through song.

In these final Days of Awe, we approach the palace of tears, the palace of song. Unlocking their gates through a deep exploration of our greatest hurts and our greatest joys from the past year. What will you find there?

Please join us as we gather as a global community yearning for the transformation that these Holy Days promise: a spiritual conclusion from last year and commencement into this new year. Tears and song and everything inbetween are welcome.

Please join our beautiful intergenerational, international, introspective, and inclusive community to mark this most sacred time of year. It is not too late to register; the gates are open. See below for details. All are welcome.

All programs are free, and if you, and would like to consider an end of the year gift, please do so at: keepingitsacred.com/our-future. Every bit of support helps us produce quality, accessible, relevant, and empowering programming.

Together, may we make it a sweet, happy, and healthy new year!

Together, may we continue our work #keepingitsacred...

A BIT ABOUT... THE NEW YEAR

To prepare for the holiest time of the year, enjoy this video sharing some of Rabbi Miller's favorite elements of the upcoming High Holy Days.

TASHLICH 5782

Yesterday, Martina, Frida, and Rabbi Miller gathered at a beach in Santa Monica along with several KITS Community members tuning in via zoom to observe the ritual of Tashlich. This service is observed with the practice of casting bread crumbs into the ocean, a physical expression of the spiritual work we are doing now to cast of the negativity of the past year. Prayers were read, songs were sung, and names were shared for healing and loving remembrance. And afterwards, a lovely walk on the beach. This marks the first official hybrid in-person/over zoom meeting of Keeping It Sacred. A milestone! May we all return again to the best of ourselves in the new year.

MAZAL TOV ON THE BIRTH OF LEVI!

Saturday, September 4, Marcia & Marty of San Diego became grandparents (affectionately known as Grammy & Grumpy) to baby Levi, son of daughter-in-law Heather & son Seth. We rejoice with them and also Levi's cousins in England, Keeping It Sacred members Erin, Matthew & Alex. Mazal Tov to all! Look at that face!

MAZAL TOV ON THE BIRTH OF GRANDCHILDREN!

Saturday, September 4, Sheryl and David of Ohio became grandparents to twins Hazel & Theo, born to son Ben & daughter in law Avra of San Francisco! Despite early birth and low birth weight, the twins are healthy and thriving under the care of the NICU. We rejoice with them on their entrance to the world and all of the potential that they represent for their family, the Jewish people, and the world- mazal tov to all! We are thrilled that they are here! Photos show Hazel on the left and Theo on the right.

MAZAL TOV TO HEIDI!

A major Mazal Tov to Heidi on the twice blessed occasions of her Second Day Rosh HaShanah conversion ceremony, and the occasion of her 50th birthday! Just part of her deeply moving sharing of her Jewish journey included this sharing:

"It turns out that two branches of my family were Jews who immigrated to Nebraska in the late 1850s and assimilated to Protestantism. This history was totally hidden from me. When I was 22 and learned about my Jewish great-grandmother Ida Soloman who immigrated from Ireland. And when I was 26, at my Grandma Sieck’s funeral someone said to me off-handedly “well, you know she was a Jew.”

No. I did not know that.

Over the past year and half, studying with Rabbi Hayley, Rabbi Buyer-Whitman, Rabbi Reinhardt and Rabbi Miller in LA, I learned about Jewish values grounded in community, family, service, liberation and inquiry all connected to the natural world infused with a universal sovereign God. How glorious is that?

I discovered that parts of my family still held onto these Jewish values despite their decision to hide themselves. We were always a little 'different' than folks in the tiny all white, all Christian Nebraska towns where we lived.
We were more progressive. Civil servants. Political activists. And there was a secret family challah recipe disguised as “rolls” that always won awards at country fairs."

We are so glad you found your way to affirming your place among the NY Jewish community, and especially among the KITS community! Heidi, we celebrate YOU!

What people say:

"Yesterday's class was superb!! I remain impressed by so many things that you do! You are able to keep us on track, share (some of) your knowledge with us, make all sorts of connections to the Jewish and secular worlds, and meet each of us where we are! Kudos to you!!"

"Talmud study has opened a window to that world for me. I love the anthropology and sociology of it all."

"The minority opinions may someday count as much as the majority opinions. It reminds us that things change the Halacha changes and we change each year that we read it."

"We have the opportunity to compare the Halacha we are practicing today with the one they were writing and studying in the Talmud... It has been very interesting how things have evolved how we keep the tradition in our own way."

"I feel very close to this amazing group and I'm grateful to Rabbi Miller for conducting it."

AND just prior to our Talmud Study, we hold space for check-ins and healing prayers for loved ones in need, including ourselves.
