Ray of Light Farm

June 2020 Newsletter

How are things in your world? Hope all is well.

We are still working very hard to move forward in these difficult financial times. Ray of Light Farm will be opening to the public on a phased in basis starting Saturday June 27th, and Sunday June 28th! We will be adding days as we measure the COVID-19 response and our capacity. We are so excited that we will be able to welcome our public family back to the farm in this challenging time. Our hours now will be from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

We are asking our public to wear masks and practice safe social distancing while at the farm. We will not be asking for patrons to sign in at this time. Please note that our public bathrooms will be closed due to COVID-19, so please plan for that before you visit. We will also not be able to offer pony rides or wagon rides because of state guidelines.

Save-A-Buck Tack & Gift store will open with the same hours.

Opening to the public also means we will be adding more lessons to our schedule. All of our students out there, please know we have NOT forgotten about you, and we miss you all a lot. We eagerly look forward to seeing you again!

What about our volunteers? There are still many volunteers waiting to come back and help the farm. You also have NOT been forgotten! We are working on building a schedule, that allows more volunteer opportunities for everyone. Our main concern is keeping everyone well, and safe.

2020 Travelers Championship - Birdies for Charity

The Travelers Championship is proud to be a PGA TOUR event that donates 100 percent of net proceeds to charity every year. Since 1952, the tournament has given more than $42 million to the community, and in 2019, the Travelers Championship generated $2.1 million for more than 150 charities throughout New England. The tournament is committed to supporting our charitable community through Birdies for Charity and Chip In for Charity.

It is a PGA TOUR initiative to build a community of tournaments, players, charities, sponsors, partners, volunteers and fans who are committed to making a social investment by helping others. The majority of the funds raised as a professional sporting league are directed back into the local community where the tournament is held. This means that there isn’t one specific beneficiary of the PGA TOUR. Instead there are nearly 3,000 charities and countless individuals worldwide who are touched by the TOUR’s goal of giving back.

Launched in 2004, Birdies for Charity provides every 501(c)(3) in Connecticut an opportunity to raise awareness for its cause. The program is simply a giving platform that utilizes the excitement around the tournament to help nonprofits across the region raise awareness and funds to support their missions. The Travelers Championship sends 100% of collected donations to participating charities.

Thanks to the support of Enterprise, each organization that raises money through Birdies for Charity will receive a 15% bonus on top of every donation collected.

What does this mean for Ray of Light Farm?

We have been entered into this years charity. Last year we were able to raise $35,400 through our Birdies for Charity fundraising. Help us continue to keep our farm farm alive by donating today! Holly was adopted!

Our beautiful chestnut Thoroughbred mix mare, Holly, went to her new home. She will be missed, very much, but we are so glad to have finally found her the right home.

Holly came to us to be a lesson horse, but due to her sensitivity, she did not quite fit the beginner lesson horse slot we were looking to fill. She has now found a wonderful new home, where she will be the center of attention (with two other horses), and will be doted & loved on. Holly no longer needs to stress about a lot of people, and a lot of different riders. Some horses just aren't suited for the world of lesson horses, and that's ok. It takes a very special individual to take many riders for rides, and happily continue doing this job for a long time.

We are also very excited to say that we will always know how Holly is doing, as she was adopted by a long time friend of the farm. Also super exciting news, Holly's new best friend is Abby. The girls look quite happy together, don't you think?

Happy trails Holly, Elisa, and Abby!

The Horse Feathers Veterans Program is returning!

Although we usually take some of the summer off, we have decided that, weather permitting, we will be having an eight week Horse Feathers session beginning on Wednesday, July 8, 2020 and running each Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. until August 26, 2020.

Please keep in mind that in the event that the weather will be extraordinarily hot and/or humid, we will cancel that Wednesday's program and notify you by Tuesday.  We cannot wait to see you again.  New participants are welcome.

It's a Baby Guinea Keet!

We have new life! This little Guinea Keet is the cutest thing ever, don't you think? Pictured shortly after hatching.

What is a Guinea Keet, you may ask? It is a baby Guinea fowl. And what is that??? Guinea fowl (sometimes referred to as Guinea hens) are of West African origins. This small and hardy bird is a relative of the chicken and partridge. The bird’s name has always been confusing, since the terms “guinea fowl” and “guinea hen” are used interchangeably, and refer to either female or male birds of the species. In plumage the sexes are indistinguishable, but the males are larger.

Guinea fowl are easily recognizable by the distinct white dotted pattern of their pearly gray plumage, as well as their bald, vulture-like head. Guinea fowl are similar in size to chickens and pheasants. They have a distinctive screech for a voice, sometimes described as a rusty windmill.

Clean Out Your Closets!

Help us by emptying out those closets and drawers.  We will only be accepting "soft" goods including shoes, bedding, clothing, boots, purses, towels, curtains, etc. We will NOT accept any other goods such as knick knacks, books, kitchen appliances, toys, or any other "hard" items. All goods should be in plastic bags, no boxes.

On July 29th, all of these items will be taken to Savers, where we will receive a donation for the entire weight of the load. That money goes directly into our Horse Feathers Veterans program, to benefit all the Veterans, and the animals included in this program. Any amount of items will be a great help.

We will begin accepting donations June 20th, 2020. Fundraiser will run all the way through July 28th, 2020.

All items/bags can be dropped off any day from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Thank you from the bottom of our closet...er, hearts!
