Women Matter Canada

Newsletter: June 2, 2022

Happy June, everyone! The weather is getting warmer as we near summer. We have so much to share with you!

What We Are Up To

Elections

If you are in Ontario, do not forget to vote today!

Other than Ontario's provincial election that is happening today, Quebec is holding its own provincial election on October 23.

A number of provinces will also be holding municipal elections this year. And aside from the Conservative Party of Canada, a number of  provincial political parties will be holding their own leadership races. Joining a political party, even one you with which do not necessarily align (with), is a good way to create change. If enough of us join (in numbers) we have enough people to bring the conversation of women's rights forward. It is at this level that we can affect party policy. Check with the appropriate party to identify the deadline for purchasing a membership. (to check when the deadline is to purchase a membership)

We have all the information of where and when on our website, as well as some ideas in how you can get involved.

Save Women's Sport Campaign

Women Matter Canada has reached out to each provincial/territorial minister in charge of sport with a package which includes both the Macdonald Laurier Institute's Report (December 2021) ,and the summary of research that was completed by World Rugby (summer 2020), both of which you can find here. We are waiting to send a letter to the Ontario Minister as the province is currently in the midst of a provincial election.

We encourage you and others to send your own letter to your MPP/MLA and provincial minister in charge of sport. To help, we have created a guide for your letter, along with the email address and office address of the minister responsible, which you can find here. The more letters sent, the more officials will listen. If you would rather send a postcard, we still have our sport theme postcards available.

Current Federal Bills

The following Bills affecting women are currently going through the Senate and/or House of Commons:

  • S-205: An Act to amend the Criminal Code and to make consequential amendments to another Act (interim release and domestic violence recognizance orders)

  • S-218: An Act to amend the Department for Women and Gender Equality Act

  • S-224: An Act to amend the Criminal Code (trafficking in persons)

New Items In Store

We wouldn't be able to do all of this without your help. With that in mind we have some new items available for purchase. Shirts with the definition of woman, bilingual door hangers, and more. While the stickers are coming in too late for the Ontario provincial elections, we have general election stickers available in French and English next week. We will also be offering special election and ‘woman’ definition packages. All proceeds go towards continuing our work.
