"It's the Teachers Who Learn the Most" Astrophysicist Gillian Knapp shares her experience teaching in prisons |
Princeton University Professor Gillian Knapp was one of the co-founders of the Prison Teaching Initiative back in 2005, and has been teaching math and science courses in NJ prisons ever since. Maryam Bey, Coordinator of Reentry Services for Newark, Visits FORTE House |
Maryam Bey has spent 17 years supporting people as they navigate reentry in Newark. "Reentry chose me," she says of her career. She recently spent time visiting with FORTE House residents and learning about their experience with reentry as they pursue post-secondary degrees and certifications. We could easily see her philosophy coming to life in the conversation: "What I do [in my work] is, I see the greatness in you. No matter what you've done, I see the greatness in you. Here, Maryam stands with resident Parish in a FORTE House study room; behind is a poster for her book, "Broken Spirit." Thank you for your visit, Maryam, and for all that you give to Newark--especially Newark residents in the reentry process. |

Captain Peppers Builds Bridges At FORTE House and Beyond! |
Captain Peppers of the Newark 5th Precinct stopped by FORTE House last month to get to know our residents and the mission of our house. He stayed for 3 hours! The Captain listened, he shared his own experiences growing up in Newark, and he pointed to local resources available for the justice impacted population in our community. He has also visited since then. We now have a designated Captain's Chair! See more from his visit on our Facebook page. Thank you, Captain Peppers for diminishing the divide between the formerly incarcerated population and law enforcement. You are rewriting history! |

Q: "Does FORTE House Give Tours?" |
Believe it or not, we get this question often! A: Do you? Do you allow groups of strangers to walk through your house, peeking into bedrooms and assessing your kitchen cupboards? Unless your house is for sale, we're guessing the answer is "no." And that's our answer, too. FORTE House is a home. It's where our residents sleep and eat, study and (occasionally) relax. It's not a museum. We love you but, please: No tours! |
