Summer at the Farm!

And just like that July is almost over... There is lots happening at the farm now that summer is in full swing and time is flying.  All the animals moved out to pasture in June so daily chores are a bit more involved now.

A few weeks ago our flock of 240 young laying hens went out on pasture. They will start laying sometime in late September and we should have plenty of eggs for everyone then. So for those of you who are currently not getting eggs because we don’t have enough, hold on just a little while longer.

With so many young laying hens on pasture we needed 2 more portable chicken shelters to be able to house the meat birds who where still in the brooder. So while my (Norwin’s) parents where gone to Germany for most of June we used my dad’s wood working shop to build 2 more shelters. It was lovely building them inside as it allowed us to work on them whenever it rained, or was really hot outside.

And finally we got the shelters finished and meat birds moved out at the end of June.

This week I (Norwin) have been trying to make hay. We had hoped to have most of it done by now but thundershowers and rain keep putting dampers on our plans. Now the 30 acres of cut grass is getting a thorough washing. Unfortunately it will not result in cleaner hay but rather make it dusty and lose it's nutrition.

Ruth has also been busy making cheese, butter yogurt and ice cream for us. Oh yes, and milking our old jersey cow twice a day to get enough milk for all those yummy dairy products.

Farm Business Survey follow-up

Thank you very much to all of you who filled out our survey and congratulations to Karen L. who won $100 shopping credit with us!  It is very helpful to actually know what our customers want, not just to guess.

As far as the results of the survey go, one thing that we kept hearing was that many of you would like the option to buy weekly at a farmers market, or have our products delivered straight to your door. Unfortunately due to several factors we are unable to do that currently (except eggs) but we will be working towards that goal over the next couple of years. Until then we have decided to just keep going with the pre-order scheme and subscription option. A little slower pace will actually be good for us with another child due to be born in September and me still needing off farm income to support our personal finances.

So stay tuned as we keep slowly growing our farm business and thank you so much for your feedback and support.
