True Freedom Ministries Partnership

This past week, we had the honor of donating several Bibles to True Freedom Ministries in Cleveland, Ohio — an evangelical, non-profit organization dedicated to reaching people locked in jails and prisons, the homeless, and those trapped in addiction across Ohio with the message of the true freedom found only in Jesus Christ.

We praise God for working in the hearts of those who donated to our cause at the Visions Attire pop-up shop in August. These Bibles will be used and given to prisoners involved in the ministry, and our prayer is that they can be saved by grace through faith in Jesus’ efforts alone, and not their own.

Athlete Interview

We caught up with Micah Davis, a senior football player at Dexter High School in Michigan to ask him about his faith and athletic career. Davis is also an All-American and State Champion in Track & Field, and has recently committed to the University of Michigan to join the Wolverines at the safety position on the football field. Here's what he had to say!

Q: What was your recruiting process like?

A: "I had a bit of a different recruiting process than normal. Freshman and sophomore year I had a broken ankle, so I could only play my junior and senior year. It set back the whole process and made it harder to get looks. It was a big challenge and I had to put myself out there in some more different ways. At the end of my junior year I went to camps all off-season and got some more eyes on me, and then by my senior year it started blowing up a little more once people started seeing that I was reliable, and capable of having more than just one good year. I was getting looks from MAC schools, Ivy League schools, and then eventually Big Ten schools before I committed to Michigan."

Q: With 'The Game' coming up this Saturday, How excited are you to eventually participate in one of the greatest sports rivalries? (Michigan vs. Ohio State)

A: "It’s going to be special playing for Michigan in general, but in that game even more. Whenever I watch on TV, I get nervous like if I was going to be playing in it myself. It’s a dream come true to think that it’s a possibility, and so I thank God for even having the opportunity."

Q: How does your faith in the Lord guide you as a football player, and as a young man?

A: "For football specifically, I can only thank God for giving me the athletic ability and the strength to go through what I did, and still be able to play the game. The recruiting process is something that most people never get to go through, so I can only thank God for that as well. My goal as a person is to build a platform and keep God at the core of that, whether it’s through my character or my actions. With my platform at Michigan, little kids are going to be looking up to me, and I know that I can be a role model to teach them how to be a good son or daughter, and person in general. It’s just about remaining humble and keeping my beliefs while I have this experience that not many people get to have."

Q: What advice would you give to someone who is unsure about putting their faith in Jesus?

A: "I would just say to pray about it. Even if you feel like you aren’t hearing anything back, continue to pray over it. It’s faith for a reason, and just because you can’t see (God) that doesn’t make it not true. Just think of all the reasons it could be true. For example, our bodies heal themselves, nature is beautiful... so to me it doesn’t seem like there could be anything else as the answer."

Davis now looks to finish out his final year of high school before suiting up for Michigan next fall. He can be found on Instagram @micahj.davis or on Twitter @MicahDavis2005

Weekly Devotional

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)

Jesus gives the Christian both a compliment and a responsibility when He says that we are the light of the world. It also must be noted that on two other separate occasions, Jesus referred to Himself as the light (John 8:12 and John 9:5). So what do we do with this?

Jesus is not challenging us to become the light. He says that we already are! In the same way that a town built on a hill is prominent and hard to take your eyes off of, Jesus wants His people to live visible lives that attract attention to the beauty of God's work in them. The idea of putting this light on a lampstand is to let everyone see it in this world full of darkness. Not in such a way that we are taking credit for ourselves, but so that we can give all the glory to God. And so that others will see and do the same.

Reflection:

  1. Do I act as a light in the lives of those around me?

  2. Who are the people in my life who act as a light in the darkness?

  3. When I do someone a favor, am I doing it in hopes of getting something in return? Or out of the kindness of my heart?
