We caught up with Micah Davis, a senior football player at Dexter High School in Michigan to ask him about his faith and athletic career. Davis is also an All-American and State Champion in Track & Field, and has recently committed to the University of Michigan to join the Wolverines at the safety position on the football field. Here's what he had to say!
Q: What was your recruiting process like?
A: "I had a bit of a different recruiting process than normal. Freshman and sophomore year I had a broken ankle, so I could only play my junior and senior year. It set back the whole process and made it harder to get looks. It was a big challenge and I had to put myself out there in some more different ways. At the end of my junior year I went to camps all off-season and got some more eyes on me, and then by my senior year it started blowing up a little more once people started seeing that I was reliable, and capable of having more than just one good year. I was getting looks from MAC schools, Ivy League schools, and then eventually Big Ten schools before I committed to Michigan."
Q: With 'The Game' coming up this Saturday, How excited are you to eventually participate in one of the greatest sports rivalries? (Michigan vs. Ohio State)
A: "It’s going to be special playing for Michigan in general, but in that game even more. Whenever I watch on TV, I get nervous like if I was going to be playing in it myself. It’s a dream come true to think that it’s a possibility, and so I thank God for even having the opportunity."
Q: How does your faith in the Lord guide you as a football player, and as a young man?
A: "For football specifically, I can only thank God for giving me the athletic ability and the strength to go through what I did, and still be able to play the game. The recruiting process is something that most people never get to go through, so I can only thank God for that as well. My goal as a person is to build a platform and keep God at the core of that, whether it’s through my character or my actions. With my platform at Michigan, little kids are going to be looking up to me, and I know that I can be a role model to teach them how to be a good son or daughter, and person in general. It’s just about remaining humble and keeping my beliefs while I have this experience that not many people get to have."
Q: What advice would you give to someone who is unsure about putting their faith in Jesus?
A: "I would just say to pray about it. Even if you feel like you aren’t hearing anything back, continue to pray over it. It’s faith for a reason, and just because you can’t see (God) that doesn’t make it not true. Just think of all the reasons it could be true. For example, our bodies heal themselves, nature is beautiful... so to me it doesn’t seem like there could be anything else as the answer."
Davis now looks to finish out his final year of high school before suiting up for Michigan next fall. He can be found on Instagram @micahj.davis or on Twitter @MicahDavis2005
