Compassion for All Beings

Spring, the most expensive time of the year!

COME VISIT US AT OUR SUMMER OPEN HOUSE, JULY 30TH!

SHEEP ARE AMAZING!

Sheep are able to experience emotions such as fear, anger, despair, boredom and happiness.

They also display and recognize emotion by facial expressions and prefer a smile to a frown.

Sheep can recognize up to 50 other sheep faces and remember them for two years. Sheep can also recognize human faces.

They are extremely intelligent and capable of problem solving.

Female sheep (ewes) are very caring mothers and form deep bonds with their lambs that can recognize them by call (bleat) when they wander too far away.

Most sheep have large, curling horns made out of keratin - the same element that's present in human fingernails. The horns help regulate their internal body temperature and can act as an air conditioning system during hot weather.  Sheep have excellent peripheral vision.

Their large, rectangular pupils allow them to see almost 360 degrees and they can see behind themselves without turning their heads.

They build friendships, stick up for one another and feel sad when their friends are sent to slaughter.

And if given the chance, they can live up to 12 years!

There are approximately 900 different species of sheep in the world.

We currently have 15 sheep at HFS. Their names are Ghost, Tristan, Hallelujah, Diana, Freja, Odin, Soba, Mochi, Cinnamon, Twilight, Lee, Mark, Noel, Tuesday and Bruce Hornsby!

WHY IS SPRING THE MOST EXPENSIVE TIME OF THE YEAR??

Our more than 145 rescued farm animals have everything they need all year long BUT each spring, we take extra measures to ensure that they stay happy and healthy in the coming seasons.

The sheep need shearing (all 15).

Mac & Ruby need haircuts.

Most need vaccinations.

The pigs, cows and horses need hoof trims.

They also need fly and sun protection.

All need deworming.

Straw for bedding needs replacing.

And of course, we continuously need hay.

YOU AND RAI MAKE A GREAT TEAM!

This is Rai.

He's one of our wonderful volunteers. He feeds, cleans, loves on and does most of the maintenance around the farm. When we moved to our new location almost 2 summers ago, he dug all the trenches, built (from scratch) many of the animal sleeping structures and assisted with the relocation of our sweet animal residents.

Here Rai is putting up our new "outside" hay house. You see, right now most hay is stored inside the barn (fire hazard) or outside exposed to all the elements. We needed this badly. Hay prices are through the roof, so we need to carefully take care of it the best we can. This new structure will protect our investment from the sun, rain, wind or whatever comes our way and most importantly removes it from our barn!

It was a beautiful sunny day here in Central Oregon, so I'm sure Rai could have found something else to do but instead he spent the entire day working on and completing this much needed project.

That's why you and Rai make a great team.

I hope you realize how much we appreciate your support and how evident that is in this picture of Rai working hard putting it into action.

Teamwork makes the dreamwork!
