VALE ARNOLD JONES 1935 - 2023 Hensman Park Tennis Club remembers our friend Arnold. "Arnold was a really great guy and never needed to be asked to help out, he just mucked in whenever and wherever it was needed. I would come in regularly to see him digging up a sprinkler or pulling some weeds. He was just a really great guy." "He was just so kind. He supported me through my husband's accident and then checked in with me for the next 10 years to make sure I was ok. That's the sort of man he was. He was also very generous with his hugs to me!" "Arnold was always prepared to help whatever the problem, including medical. I had a knee problem and Arnold saw I was limping substantially. He jumped in to assist even though he had only just arrived at the club for an after-tennis drink. He retrieved his medical bag, instructed me to lie on the kitchen table and proceeded to inject my knee with cortisone. It worked within days and my knee has remained A1 ever since. Arnold was an A1 doctor and friend." "Arnold, Doug N, Alan M and I (Peter H) shared Airbnb accommodation at many places when attending the Australian Seniors annual Teams Tennis Championships. Arnold was our excellent BBQ cook. That was about all he could cook but he was a great house-mate and we always had a lot of fun. He once left his iPad and mobile phone in a bag at Melbourne airport which caused a great rukus. We got the bag back, but sadly, without the iPad! We swam in the outdoor ocean pool at Newcastle Beach where I was the lifeguard. Neither he nor Doug could really swim but it was very enjoyable. I shall always have very fond memories of those trips." "He was always smiling, always happy. Such a wonderful member of the Hensman Family and I will really miss him around the Club." Our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the Jones Family. Arnold will be dearly missed at Hensman. |

CLUB FEEDBACK SURVEY RESULTS There were some great responses from our Feedback Survey run over Winter, and plenty of innovative ideas. Please see the table below for a short summary of some of the feedback and the actions we are already undertaking at the Club. As a member run Club, the expectation is that everyone helps out in a way that suits them. Can you serve in the bar one night? Can you run a BBQ here and there? Are you able to facilitate Twilight Social Tennis occasionally? Are you handy around the home or garden and may be able to help with some of our smaller maintenance jobs? Please keep an eye out for communications asking for volunteers and donate a small part of your time to help us improve our Club and implement more of these ideas. For a more detailed summary of the Survey, please contact the office, and if you are interested in more information regarding the Building Upgrade Master Plan, please make yourself known to Ken McIntosh. |

TENNIS TRIVIA Tennis, the cursed sport for Royalty... Louis X of France became extremely dehydrated after a tennis game in 1316, 'glugged a giant urn of chilled wine' and promptly died. King James I of Scotland, who after losing many balls to a nearby sewer, had it sealed up. Three days later when assassins attempted to dispatch the King, James attempted to flee through the floorboards, only to be trapped by his sealed sewer and murdered. King Charles VIII of France, rushing through his castle to see a highly anticipated game of tennis, hit his head and died. King George II's son Frederick was struck by a tennis ball in his chest in 1751. This misadventure resulted in a fatal lung abscess. Queen Anne Boleyn was watching a tennis match when summonsed for execution. As she was being beheaded, her loving husband King Henry VIII was off playing a game of... tennis. |

MEMBER PROFILE JAMES WILLIAMS James was born on 5 September 1973 in Bermuda, making him a Virgo and Ox, and bestowing upon him the tennis-assisting virtues of patience, honesty & stubbornness. He shares his birthday with Michael Keaton, Freddie Mercury, Raquel Welch and Mother Teresa, none of whom, by all reports, were particularly good at tennis.
James began his childhood in Bateman and after completing high school at Wesley College, went on to pursue a Diploma of Accounting at TAFE followed by Masters at New England University.
James joined Hensman as a junior and volunteered as a linesperson. He became a line umpire at the Junior Hopman Cup in 1992-93, following it up with his first Australian Open in 2001. Twenty more Aussie Opens followed, during which the highlight of his umpiring career saw him refereeing the Men's Doubles final and acting as reserve for the Women's Singles in 2018. Being carried off court after being hit in the head by a wayward Justin Gimelstob forehand was one of the not-so-fun experiences.
While playing competitive tennis for HPTC, James has won 10 shields and one MVP award. In his mid 20’s he was ranked #39 in WA and went on to win the Singles Championship at Mosman Park Tennis Club. James has also received an Official of the Year award from Tennis West. He has coached at many clubs and can currently be found coaching at East Fremantle and Onslow Park Tennis Clubs.
Margot has been James’ partner for over 20 years and Oliver is their 17 year old son. |
