Rights Tips

Can a police officer confiscate my driver’s license?

Yes, the DMV regulation authorizes police to summarily suspend a license under certain conditions on behalf of the DMV commissioner and forward it to the DMV for further action.

The law also prohibits someone from refusing to surrender his driver’s license, registration certificate, insurance identification card, or vehicle license plate ā€œon demand of the commissionerā€ or to fail to produce this license when requested by a court.

Civil Rights Pioneer

Have you met the ā€˜disruptive’ activist from Minneapolis?

As president of the Minneapolis chapter of the NAACP, Nekima Levy Armstrong has been heavily involved in the Black Lives Matter movement. Armstrong has led protests against police brutality both in 2014, after the shooting of Michael Brown, and 2020, after the killing of George Floyd. She has also fiercely advocated for justice in cases that haven’t made national news, like the shooting of Jamar Clark. For her activism, Nekima has been arrested multiple times. She hasn’t just used her position to disrupt; she has brought tangible change to Minneapolis. Armstrong has raised funds for African American cultural museums. She also operates Brotherhood Inc. a nonprofit aimed to keep young black men away from gang activity. Still involved in activism in the Minneapolis area, she is working diligently to make policing more transparent and just.

Social Impact Platforms

Shaker Tech: An interactive Method of Teaching

Kinfolk is an app using augmented reality, also known as AR, to better educate the next generation about Black historical figures. The app originally started out as a movement to reconsider the monuments in our country. In America, where there are far too many monuments dedicated to racist slave owners, Kinfolk wanted to provide better historical examples for future generations. With the app, users can view monuments to historical Black figures anywhere in the world and listen to narrated biographies or get an in-depth look into related archives.
