We'd like to introduce you to Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum) A close relative of Joe-pye Weed, Boneset produces showy clusters of tiny white flowers. It is a good companion for Joe-Pye weed, Asters and Goldenrods in wet meadows, and provides sustenance for birds and butterflies. It has been used as a remedy for colds, fever, broken bones and as a tonic, but must be used with caution as it can also cause vomiting! This plant is fairly flexible with soil type, and can be grown in wet habitats including marshes, wet meadows and at the edges of ponds. |

A plant at risk Spiked/Dense Blazing Star (Liatris spicata) This perennial is a spectacular addition to any garden. Spiked blazing star provides a lovely contrast to the many species that produce yellow flowers in mid-summer. The purple flowers that reach 2 to 5 feet tall are a favorite of butterflies, including monarchs, hummingbirds and other pollinators. The root has been used as a diuretic and to treat sore throat and gonorrhea. It grows well in full sun, average soils, and in moist meadows and prairies. The main threat to this beautiful and valuable plant is habitat loss and alteration due to urban development. | | |

Ecosystem Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) A major part of ecosystem restoration is the sustainable management, conservation and restoration of ecosystems to reducing disaster risk, with the aim to achieve sustainable and resilient development. For instance, the deep roots of native species helps to reduce soil erosion and land slides on steep slopes, while native plants evolved for wet areas can absorb great amounts of water and prevent flood events.
