Take a Look Inside
Hope During Times of Uncertainty

Destiny Williams, LCSW-S
It may seem that uncertainty is all around us
from our country’s politics and economics to

our own jobs and our family’s safety. When we consider all we read on the internet or

watch on the news, it can feel overwhelming or even anxiety provoking. So how do we maintain hope during moments when life feels unsure?

1. Find Perspective

What we focus on becomes our reality and we start to see it everywhere. Find perspective by moving your focus to notice the good in your day and the world.

Notice when someone is kind to you or someone around you such as opening a door

or smiling and saying good morning. Follow news sources or social media accounts that focus on positive stories and good news.

2. Practice Gratitude

Take time to reflect on things you are grateful for, no matter how big or small. Keeping a

gratitude journal can help shift your focus to positive aspects of your life.

3. Limit Negative Information

Be mindful of how much time you spend consuming news or social media that may

increase anxiety. Choose reliable sources and allocate specific times to stay informed without becoming overwhelmed.

4. Focus on What You Can Control

Identify aspects of your life that you have control over and take proactive steps in those

areas. Setting daily routines or taking control over your health provides a sense of

stability.

5. Stay Flexible and Adaptable

Embrace change as a part of life and be open to adjusting your plans. Flexibility can

help you navigate uncertainty with greater ease. Be willing to change plans, adjust

times, and learn something new.

Remember, this journey through uncertainty is a shared human experience. Every

generation before us has faced and overcome their own challenges, and you will too.

Embrace the resilience within you and trust that you have the strength to persevere.

Grounding

Destiny Williams, LCSW-S

When we are thinking about the past or future and feeling overwhelmed, grounding is a

tool we can use to help us stay present in the moment. Grounding is simply focusing on the

present using our 5 senses. A grounding tool that first learned is a simple activity called

The ABC Game. This grounding technique is much like the childhood game of I Spy. The

directions are simple: Using your five senses, name objects either around or on you that

you can see, hear, touch, feel, or taste that begin with each letter of the alphabet. Ex: A- I

smell the air, B- I see the brush in my bag, C- I feel the collar on my shirt, etc. Grounding

moves your mind from the worries about the past and future and grounds it back into the

present. You can practice this alone while taking deep breaths or play it as a game with a

your young child or teen.
