Humans of EarthLinks

Welcoming Hailey

Hailey was born and raised in Southern California and recently finished her degree in Political Science-Public Service and Sociology from the University of California, Davis. Trading the beach for the mountains, she decided to forge a new path by moving to Denver and serving with AmeriCorps. With a strong passion for the environment and equality, she is thrilled to be working on behalf of the EarthLinks mission. She is also excited to learn more about gardening and promote EarthLinks' wonderful and sustainable products. In her free time, she likes to run (slowly), read books (quickly) and sketch (averagely).

Hailey decided to join the EarthLinks team because she is passionate about their multi-faceted approach to healing with people and the environment, “I thought that I had to choose one cause to devote myself to, but here at EarthLinks I have the opportunity to grow in a community of people as well as make sustainable practices more accessible”. Her hope is to spend her time in service gaining meaningful insight into the nonprofit realm and what a career in helping others and Earth consists of.

Community Updates

Grateful for Imagine!

In September, EarthLinks hosted Imagine! This event is a celebration of the people and mission of EarthLinks, as well as our biggest fundraiser of the year. Thank you to everyone who attended, bidded on auction items, made donations, or contributed in any other way. With your support, we raised over $143,000. We are grateful for your support at this event and throughout the year.

The EarthLinks team would also like to extend a special thank you to Karl Mecklenburg for speaking at the event. Karl drew from his experience as an exceptional Broncos player to share his insights on leadership. There are several Participants who were delighted to meet a Broncos player, and especially to be seated at the same table for the evening. We are so grateful to Karl for sharing his time, and for the care and consideration he shared in being the keynote speaker at this event. It was truly an honor!

Grilled Cheese and Karaoke Fun

This month Participants and Staff gathered over grilled cheese and sang some karaoke! This event was organized by Leadership, a group of Participants who take on the responsibility of planning Trips to Nature, events, and discussing Participant needs. Participants were also invited to bring their pets, adding even more joy to the day. Events like these are what EarthLinks is all about: bringing people together to have fun and bring joy to one another's lives.

Garden Updates

As the cold weather creeps in, it is time to put the garden to bed. This month we have been harvesting everything we can, pulling up remaining plants for compost, and laying straw in the beds. Though it is sad to see the garden lose its vibrancy, it is a reminder from Mother Nature that it is time to rest. This season brings restoration, quiet, and a slower pace of things. We will appreciate the resting season, and soon enough, it will be time to start planting again. Connection with Earth pulls us closer to the cycles of nature and brings appreciation for each of the seasons.

Sometimes the garden surprises us! We discovered these squash growing near the dumpsters at EarthLinks. We're not sure how they came to be, but our best guess is they are some cross between the squash varieties we grow intentionally. Though a little funky, they're quite pretty, and would make great fall decor. Maybe we will even find a brave soul to test how they taste! In any case, we are always impressed by Earth's creativity.
