A MESSAGE FROM THE ACTING PRESIDENT Greetings fellow sawdust makers, As many of you already know our President Bernie Nelsen has passed away in October of 2021. Since that time, I have taken over the responsibilities of “Acting President”. The Alaska Creative Woodworkers Association (ACWA) is a 501 C 3 nonprofit made up of 3 clubs. The Carvers, Scrollers, and the Woodworkers. Your membership in ACWA allows you to participate in all 3 clubs. Each club has its own officers, including a President, Vice President and Secretary and as many Board members as they can find. The ACWA Board is made up of the Presidents and vice presidents of the 3 clubs and as many “AT LARGE” members as would like to participate. It acts as the Umbrella group for all three clubs, providing administrative functions such as the treasury, paying bills and keeping the nonprofit regulatory requirement up to date, Insurance etc. It has been several years since elections were held for the three clubs and the ACWA Board. Many of the officers have been in help their positions for years. It is time to have elections for all 3 clubs and the ACWA board. Since we do not all meet at the same time, I am proposing we have elections via e-mail. We will conduct nominations during the month of April, and vote on those nominations during the month of May. Please contact me if you would like to be nominated for any officer positions, or At Large board member for your club and or the ACWA board. ACWA is your club. And as with any association, it is only as good as the active participation of the membership I urge you to get involved and help to steer the future activities of ACWA. Interested parties contact Jim Powell, jpow1700@gmail.com, 907 887 9701. Thank You Jim Powell Acting ACWA President |

To: Current and New Members Welcome to the Alaska Creative Woodworkers Association—a club for carvers, scrollers and woodworkers. For over 35 years ACWA has offered informative monthly meetings, week-end classes for woodworkers at all levels of expertise, and seminars by well known, master woodcrafters from in and outside of the U.S. As a member you are now able to register for any class offered by the three clubs for the price of the materials, instructor and shop fees. You will also receive discounts at Alaska Industrial Hardware, Hardware Specialties, and Spenard Builders Supply. We welcome your feedback about any classes you have taken through the club, what you want/need to learn, and any experts you’d like to have us bring up for classes. Again, welcome to the club and we look forward to meeting you at a monthly meeting or class. Jim Powell Acting President Alaska Creative Woodworkers Association |

Scrollers Club Update The club met on March 22. Several members brought their saws and projects to work on. Ray and Gordon brought several beautiful projects they had recently completed. We were visited by the Nashold family. Each of the children were able to try out the different types of saws. Several of the children made puzzles and the others made small toys to take home. The parents were pleased with how much the children enjoyed the craft. The dad is even looking for a used saw for them to get started with. The family is planning to come again next month. Ray provided a brief summary of the items auctioned/sold at Artistry In Wood. It appears it was a success. Thank you to all those who donated items. We anticipate this being an annual request. There was a limited discussion about the possibility of having another scroll group that would meet in the valley. While demonstrating at the Alaska State Fair in 2021 there appeared to be a lot of interest in having a club in the valley. Further investigation will be required along with permissions and approvals. Stay tuned for more information. Our next meeting is April 16th from 10-2 at the AIH Training room. Bring our saws and a project to work on. Bring an item with an Easter theme for show and tell. Hope to see everyone next month. Until then Happy Scrolling. Rhonda Hayhurst |
